This carefully crafted 8-day journey combines two of Alaska’s crown jewels: Kenai Fjords National Park for marine wildlife and glacier viewing, and Denali National Park for the continent’s most iconic land-based safari. Travel by the historic Alaska Railroad and comfortable motor coach through some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Anchorage — Gateway to the Last Frontier
Arrive in Anchorage, nestled between the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet. Transfer independently to your downtown hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring — visit the Anchorage Museum’s Alaska Gallery for an introduction to Native cultures and frontier history, or walk the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for your first glimpse of Denali on a clear day (visible from downtown). Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 2: Alaska Railroad to Seward — America’s Most Scenic Train Journey
Board the Alaska Railroad early morning for the journey south to Seward. This 4-hour route along the Turnagain Arm and through the Kenai Mountains is consistently rated one of America’s most beautiful train rides. Watch for beluga whales in the inlet and Dall sheep on the cliffs. Arrive in Seward, a charming harbor town at the head of Resurrection Bay. Afternoon at leisure — visit the Alaska SeaLife Center or hike to Exit Glacier. Overnight in Seward.

Day 3: Kenai Fjords National Park — Glacier & Wildlife Cruise
Embark on a 6-hour cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park. The park encompasses 1,047 km² of rugged coastline, tidewater glaciers, and the massive Harding Icefield. Cruise Resurrection Bay and the outer coast, searching for humpback whales, orcas, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, puffins, and bald eagles. The highlight is arriving at either Holgate or Aialik Glacier — vast rivers of ice hundreds of feet tall, where you’ll witness thunderous calving events as house-sized chunks of ancient ice crash into the sea. Day 4: Seward to Talkeetna — Into the Interior
Leisurely morning in Seward. Mid-morning motor coach north along the scenic Seward Highway to Anchorage (90-minute lunch stop), then continue through the Matanuska Valley to Talkeetna, the quirky historic town that serves as the base camp for Denali climbing expeditions. On clear days, Denali’s massive silhouette dominates the northern horizon. Evening free to explore Talkeetna’s eclectic Main Street — craft breweries, sourdough pancake houses, and flightseeing operators. Overnight in Talkeetna.

Day 5: Talkeetna to Denali National Park
Free day in Talkeetna. Optional activities (arrange locally): flightseeing tour that lands on a glacier in the Alaska Range — an unforgettable experience as you fly past Denali’s South Face, the largest vertical relief on Earth (18,000 ft from base to summit). Or try a jet boat adventure on the Susitna River, or simply relax and watch for climbers preparing their expeditions. Evening motor coach north to the Denali National Park entrance area. Overnight near the park.

Day 6: Denali National Park — Into the Wild
Board a narrated bus for a 4-6 hour journey into Denali National Park, traveling approximately 30-43 miles along the single 92-mile Park Road. This is Alaska’s premier wildlife experience — keep cameras ready for grizzly bears digging for roots, caribou crossing the tundra, moose in willow thickets, Dall sheep on rocky slopes, and golden eagles soaring overhead. Your driver-naturalist stops for every wildlife sighting and shares the park’s natural and cultural history. On clear days, Denali reveals itself — a mountain so massive it creates its own weather. Overnight near the park.

Day 7: Denali to Anchorage — Alaska Railroad Return
Sleep in or enjoy a final morning hike near the park entrance. Midday, board the Alaska Railroad for the return journey to Anchorage. This 8-hour ride offers a completely different perspective than the road — crossing the Alaska Range, passing Summit Lake, the Indian River canyon, and Hurricane Gulch trestle (296 ft above the creek). Onboard dining car available. Arrive Anchorage around 8:00 PM. Farewell dinner at a downtown restaurant featuring Alaska king crab and wild salmon. Overnight Anchorage.

Day 8: Anchorage Departure
Depending on flight time, morning free for last-minute souvenir shopping (Alaska Native art, qiviut scarves, smoked salmon). Airport transfer on your own. Depart with memories of glaciers, whales, bears, and the Great One — Denali.
