Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Douala — Atlantic Gateway

Land at Douala International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon walking tour of Douala — Cameroon’s economic capital. Visit the old colonial quarter with its German-era buildings, the bustling Marché des Fleurs, and the Doual’art contemporary art center showcasing Cameroon’s vibrant art scene. Welcome dinner featuring ndolé (bitterleaf stew with groundnuts and fish/shrimp) — Cameroon’s national dish. Overnight in Douala.

Day 2: Limbe — Black Sand Beaches & Lava Flows

Drive along the Atlantic coast to Limbe (formerly Victoria). Visit the Limbe Wildlife Centre — a rescue sanctuary for gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, and other primates orphaned by the bushmeat trade. Walk Limbe’s distinctive black sand beaches and see the 1999 lava flow from Mount Cameroon that reached the ocean at Bakingili — a stark volcanic landscape now slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. Afternoon: Limbe Botanic Garden, one of Africa’s oldest, founded in 1892. Overnight in Limbe.

Day 3: Mount Cameroon — Africa’s Highest Active Volcano

Full-day trek on the slopes of Mount Cameroon (4,095m) — West Africa’s highest peak and one of Africa’s most active volcanoes. Hike through tropical forest transitioning to montane grasslands, with spectacular views over the Gulf of Guinea. Visit the 1999 and 2000 eruption sites. The full summit requires 3-4 days; today we explore the middle slopes (up to 2,500m) with incredible biodiversity including endemic birds and plants found nowhere else. Overnight in Buea, the historic colonial capital with German-era architecture.

Day 4: Bafoussam & Foumban — Bamileke & Bamoun Kingdoms

Travel through the Western Highlands to Bafoussam, heart of Bamileke country. Visit traditional chiefdoms with their distinctive conical-roofed palaces and intricate beadwork thrones. Continue to Foumban, capital of the Bamoun Sultanate since the 14th century. Visit the Sultan’s Palace Museum — a masterpiece of Sudano-Sahelian architecture housing centuries of royal treasures, including the Sultan’s throne, ceremonial weapons, and a writing system invented by Sultan Njoya in 1896. Watch artisans in the copper foundry quarter. Overnight in Foumban.

Day 5: Dschang — Museum of Civilizations & Cliff Views

Morning at the Dschang Museum of Civilizations — arguably Cameroon’s finest museum, tracing 2,000 years of Cameroonian cultures through extraordinary artifacts. Visit the Dschang climatic station with panoramic views from the escarpment. Afternoon: drive to Yaoundé, Cameroon’s hilltop capital. Overnight in Yaoundé.

Day 6: Yaoundé — Capital of Seven Hills

Full city tour of Yaoundé. Visit the National Museum (housed in the former presidential palace), the Reunification Monument, and the Mvog-Betsi Zoo. Explore the artisan market at Mokolo for traditional crafts. Visit the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles, a striking modernist cathedral on a hilltop. Afternoon: the Benedictine Monastery of Mont Fébé with its museum of Cameroonian art spanning 800 years. Overnight in Yaoundé.

Days 7-8: Waza National Park — Northern Savanna Safari

Fly to Maroua in the Far North. Full-day safari in Waza National Park — one of West Africa’s finest wildlife reserves. The park’s 1,700 km² of Sahelian savanna hosts elephants, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and over 370 bird species including ostriches and crowned cranes. Visit the famous Waza waterholes where wildlife congregates.
