Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Malabo

Arrive at Malabo International Airport on Bioko Island. Your guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel. Afternoon orientation of Malabo, the charming capital built on the site of a British anti-slavery naval base. Visit Plaza de la Independencia with the striking neo-Gothic Santa Isabel Cathedral (1916) built in Spanish colonial style. Walk past the Presidential Palace and the Spanish colonial buildings lining the palm-fringed avenues. Evening visit to El Barco — a ship-shaped casino and bar landmark symbolising the discovery of oil in Equatorial Guinea’s waters. Welcome dinner featuring Spanish-Guinean fusion cuisine: pepesup (spicy fish soup), grilled Atlantic fish, and malamba (sugarcane liquor). Overnight at Malabo hotel.

Day 2: Malabo Cultural Discovery

Full-day exploration of Malabo and surroundings. Morning: visit the bustling Malabo Central Market with its colorful displays of tropical fruits, bushmeat, and traditional medicines. Visit the National Library and the Cultural Centre of Spain for exhibitions on Equatorial Guinean art and literature — the only African nation where Spanish is the official language. Afternoon: visit the Punta Europa LNG terminal viewpoint to understand how oil wealth is transforming this tiny nation. Drive to the Malabo Botanical Garden to see Bioko’s unique flora. Evening at a local restaurant for traditional Bubi cuisine (the indigenous people of Bioko). Overnight at Malabo hotel.

Day 3: Bioko Island Adventure — Waterfalls & Mountains

Full-day 4×4 expedition into Bioko Island’s wild interior. Drive east through the town of Baney, then south to the Bilelipa Waterfall — a spectacular cascade in the lush rainforest. Continue through the crater lake region to Riaba, a picturesque town on the island’s eastern coast. Visit the Moka Wildlife Center and the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program research station, where international scientists study the island’s unique primates including the critically endangered Bioko drill monkey found nowhere else on Earth. Continue to the southern highlands, climbing toward Pico Basilé (3,011m), Equatorial Guinea’s highest peak — on clear days, you can see Mount Cameroon across the ocean. Return to Malabo. Overnight at hotel.

Day 4: Luba & Ureka — Southern Bioko

Full-day journey to the south of Bioko Island. Drive via Puente Cope (Cope Bridge) to Luba, a tranquil coastal town where the first Spanish settlers landed. Visit the pristine beach at Arena Blanca, used by nesting sea turtles (seasonal). Continue to Batete village to see a traditional wooden Catholic church and a cocoa plantation — Equatorial Guinea was once a major cocoa producer. Visit the spectacular Ureka Waterfall cascading directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Walk through the southern rainforest, home to several primate species including the Preuss’s monkey and red colobus. Afternoon return to Malabo. Farewell dinner at Malabo’s best restaurant. Overnight at hotel.

Day 5: Departure

Morning at leisure — visit the craft market for traditional Fang and Bubi masks and sculpture. Transfer to Malabo International Airport.
