Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Saint-Denis — Réunion’s Capital

Land at Roland Garros Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Saint-Denis. Afternoon walking tour of the capital: Rue de Paris with its elegant Creole colonial mansions (cases créoles), the Grand Marché for vanilla, spices, and crafts, and the Barachois seafront promenade. Visit the Léon Dierx Museum, housed in a former bishop’s palace, featuring works by Picasso, Renoir, and Gauguin (who spent time in the Indian Ocean). Evening: dinner at a table d’hôte — a family-run restaurant in a Creole garden serving authentic Réunionnais cuisine: rougail saucisse (spicy sausage stew), carry poulet (Creole chicken curry), and samoussas (Indian-influenced samosas with Réunionnais fillings). Overnight in Saint-Denis.

Day 2: Salazie Cirque — Waterfalls & Creole Villages

Drive into the Cirque de Salazie (UNESCO — Pitons, cirques and remparts of Réunion Island). This lush, green amphitheater receives up to 8 meters of rainfall annually — hence the countless waterfalls cascading down its walls. Visit Hell-Bourg, officially one of “France’s Most Beautiful Villages,” with its well-preserved Creole architecture, floral gardens, and the Maison Folio — a traditional Creole house museum. Hike to the Voile de la Mariée (Bride’s Veil) waterfall — a spectacular multi-tiered cascade. Afternoon: visit a vanilla plantation to learn about Réunion’s famous Bourbon vanilla production. Overnight in a gîte (mountain lodge) in Salazie.

Day 3: Piton de la Fournaise — One of Earth’s Most Active Volcanoes

Dawn departure to Piton de la Fournaise (“Furnace Peak,” 2,632m) — one of the world’s most active volcanoes (erupts roughly every 9 months). Drive up through the Plaine des Cafres highlands to the Pas de Bellecombe viewpoint (2,311m) — the sight of the vast volcanic caldera, the 8km-wide Enclos Fouqué, is breathtaking. Hike into the caldera across the lunar landscape of cooled lava flows — black, red, and iridescent volcanic rock in fantastic formations. Cross the Plaine des Sables, a red Martian-like desert plateau. Descend to the Formica Leo, a small volcanic cone used as a trail marker since the 19th century. The main hike (4-6 hours round trip) ascends to the crater rim — peer into the Dolomieu Crater, a 1km-wide chasm of surreal colors and steam vents. If the volcano is erupting during your visit, witness the incredible spectacle of lava fountains and glowing rivers from safe observation points (eruptions are monitored and approachable). Overnight near the volcano in Bourg-Murat.

Day 4: Cilaos Cirque — Thermal Springs & Mountain Villages

Drive to the Cirque de Cilaos via the incredible RN5 road with its 400+ hairpin bends climbing 1,200m. Cilaos is known for its thermal springs, wine production, and spectacular mountain setting. Visit the Maison de la Broderie (Embroidery Museum) — Cilaos is famous for its intricate days-of-the-week embroidery, a tradition brought by French nuns in the 19th century. Hike to the Roche Merveilleuse viewpoint for panoramic views over the cirque. Afternoon: relax in the thermal baths (eau de Cilaos, rich in minerals, used since the 19th century). Wine tasting at Chai de Cilaos — one of the highest vineyards in France, producing Cilaos AOC wines (white, rosé, and red). Overnight in Cilaos.

Day 5: Wild South — Lava Coast & Beaches

Descend to the Wild South (Sud Sauvage) coast. Drive the lava road through the Grand Brûlé — an area repeatedly covered by lava flows reaching the Indian Ocean, where black volcanic rock meets turquoise water in a dramatic clash. Visit the lava tunnels formed during the 2004 eruption (guided underground walk). Continue to Cap Méchant with its coconut palms bent by the trade winds and dramatic cliffs. Afternoon: relax at Grande Anse beach — a palm-fringed golden sand beach (swimming in the protected lagoon). Visit Saint-Pierre’s lively waterfront and evening market. Farewell dinner at a beachfront restaurant featuring fresh seafood — grilled marlin, octopus salad, and palm heart salad. Overnight in Saint-Pierre.

Day 6: Depart Saint-Denis

Morning drive back to Saint-Denis. Visit the Jardin de l’État (Botanical Garden) with its collection of endemic plants including the takamaka trees and orchids found only on Réunion. Last chance for vanilla, rhum arrangé (spiced rum), and embroidery souvenirs. Airport transfer. Au revoir, l’île intense!
