Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Kupang (Indonesian West Timor)
Arrive in Kupang, the capital of Indonesian West Timor. Afternoon city tour — visit the Kupang Museum and the traditional market. Briefing on the overland journey ahead. Overnight in Kupang.
Day 2: Kupang to Atambua — West Timor
Drive east through West Timor’s dramatic mountain scenery. Visit traditional villages and the Soe region known for its ikat weaving. Overnight in Atambua, near the border.
Day 3: Cross the Border — Into Timor-Leste
Cross the land border at Mota’ain into Timor-Leste. Drive to Balibo — visit the Balibo Fort and the Australian flag house, site of the 1975 killings of five journalists that drew international attention to Indonesia’s invasion. Continue to Maliana. Overnight in Maliana.
Day 4: Maliana to Maubisse
Scenic drive into the central highlands. Visit coffee plantations and meet local farmers. Afternoon arrival in Maubisse. Explore the Portuguese-era pousada (inn) and the surrounding mountains. Overnight in Maubisse.
Day 5: Mount Ramelau Sunrise
Pre-dawn summit of Mount Ramelau. Descend and continue to Dili. Arrive in the capital with a sense of having crossed the country. Overnight in Dili.
Day 6-7: Dili & Independence Day Celebrations
Two days experiencing Timor-Leste’s most important holiday — Independence Day (May 20). Traditional dance performances, parades, and celebrations across the city. Visit the Resistance Museum and Chega! Exhibition (the truth and reconciliation commission). Overnight in Dili.
Day 8: Atauro Island Day Trip
Day trip to Atauro Island. World-class snorkeling, village visits, and the island’s famous wood carving tradition. Return to Dili for farewell celebrations. Overnight in Dili.
Day 9: Depart Dili
Morning souvenir shopping for tais textiles. Transfer to airport.
