Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa
Welcome to Ethiopia’s bustling capital! Airport transfer. Afternoon visit to the National Museum — see “Lucy” (Dinknesh), the 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil that changed our understanding of human origins. Evening at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with injera, wot, and the coffee ceremony. Overnight in Addis Ababa.
Day 2: Fly to Mekele — Danakil Depression
Morning flight to Mekele, gateway to the Danakil. Drive into the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest, lowest, and most alien places on Earth (125 meters below sea level). Arrive at Hamad Ela camp. Afternoon visit to the salt flats where Afar people still mine salt by hand as they have for centuries. Overnight in basic camp.
Day 3: Dallol & Erta Ale Volcano
Dawn visit to Dallol — a psychedelic landscape of neon yellow, green, and orange sulfur formations, hot springs, and salt formations. It looks like another planet. Then begin the 3-hour hike to Erta Ale, one of the world’s few permanent lava lakes. Watch the glowing red lava churn and bubble through the night — a truly unforgettable experience. Overnight on the volcano rim (basic camp).
Day 4: Return to Mekele
Dawn at the lava lake — the best light for photography. Descend and drive back to Mekele. Well-deserved hot shower and comfortable bed. Overnight in Mekele.
Day 5: Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches
Explore the remarkable rock-hewn churches of Tigray. Visit Abuna Yemata Guh — climb a sheer rock face (with safety ropes) to reach this 5th-century church perched impossibly on a cliff. The views and the ancient frescoes inside are worth every step. Also visit Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor churches. Overnight in Hawzen.
Day 6: Axum — Ancient Empire
Drive to Axum, capital of the ancient Axumite Empire and one of Africa’s oldest civilizations. Visit the Stelae Park with its massive granite obelisks (the largest weighs 520 tons). See the Church of St. Mary of Zion, where Ethiopians believe the Ark of the Covenant is kept. Overnight in Axum.
Day 7: Lalibela — The New Jerusalem
Fly to Lalibela (via Addis). Lalibela’s 11 monolithic rock-hewn churches, carved from solid rock in the 12th century, are among the world’s greatest architectural achievements. Afternoon visit to the Northern Group: Bet Medhane Alem (the largest monolithic church in the world), Bet Maryam, and more. Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 8: Lalibela — Southern Group & St. George
Morning visit to Bet Giyorgis (St. George), the iconic cross-shaped church carved 12 meters into the rock — the most photographed church in Ethiopia. Continue to the Southern Group. Afternoon free to explore Lalibela’s mountain setting and artisan workshops. Farewell coffee ceremony. Overnight in Lalibela.
Day 9: Fly to Addis Ababa & Depart
Morning flight to Addis. Afternoon shopping at the Merkato — Africa’s largest open-air market. Transfer to Bole International Airport.
