Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Cusco to Cloud Forest — The Manu Road

Manu Biosphere Reserve covers 1.7 million hectares and is recognized as the single most biodiverse protected area on Earth — holding more bird species (1,000+) than the entire continental United States. Depart Cusco pre-dawn. The journey crosses the Andes and descends through the cloud forest, one of the most dramatic ecological transitions in the world. The Manu Road is legendary among birdwatchers — in one day you can spot the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird, brilliant orange-red), quetzals, umbrella birds, and dozens of tanager species. Overnight at a cloud forest lodge (1,600m) with hummingbird feeders attracting 15+ species.

Day 2: Pillcopata to Manu River — Into the Jungle

Continue descending from cloud forest to lowland rainforest. At Atalaya port, board motorized dugout canoes and enter the Alto Madre de Dios River, the gateway to Manu’s Reserved Zone. The river journey itself is a wildlife cruise — white caimans on sandbanks, capybaras grazing on the banks, and the occasional jaguar track in the mud. The forest canopy towers 40-50m overhead, with emergent kapok and Brazil nut trees reaching 60m. Arrive at the Manu Wildlife Center after 5 hours on the river. Evening: night walk — with luck, a kinkajou (honey bear) or night monkey. Overnight in Manu Wildlife Center.

Day 3: Macaw Clay Lick & Tapir Lick

Pre-dawn visit to the Manu clay lick — arguably the best macaw spectacle on Earth. Up to 300 red-and-green macaws, scarlet macaws, blue-headed macaws, and parrots visit the lick daily. The birds arrive before sunrise, circling and staging before descending to the clay. Their brilliant colors against the earthy cliff are a photographer’s dream. Afternoon: hike the trail system through pristine primary forest. Manu’s mammal list is extraordinary — 13 species of monkey (including the emperor tamarin with its distinctive white mustache), giant anteaters, tapirs, peccaries, and all six Peruvian cat species (jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay, jaguarundi, and oncilla). Evening: visit the tapir clay lick — at a safe distance, observe South America’s largest land mammal (up to 300kg) emerge from the forest to eat mineral-rich clay. Overnight in Manu Wildlife Center.

Day 4: Oxbow Lakes — Giant Otters & Caimans

Dawn paddle at Cocha Salvador and Cocha Otorongo, the reserve’s most famous oxbow lakes. These former river meanders, now separated from the main channel, are Manu’s most wildlife-rich habitats. Paddle silently on a catamaran raft as the sun rises through the mist. Giant river otters (up to 2m, endangered) hunt in family groups in these lakes — their vocalizations (barks, hums, and screams) echo across the water. The lake margins host sunning black caimans and sideneck turtles, while hoatzins crash through overhanging branches. With luck, a jaguar may appear at the water’s edge at dawn or dusk. Afternoon: canopy platform (42m) — at this height, you’re among woolly monkeys, spider monkeys, and a dizzying array of birds that rarely descend to the forest floor. Overnight in Manu Wildlife Center.

Day 5: River Exploration & Indigenous Community

Morning upriver to explore smaller tributaries by canoe — the narrow waterways allow closer approaches to wildlife. Arthropod life here is extraordinary: blue morpho butterflies flash through sunbeams, leafcutter ant highways stretch for hundreds of meters, and the forest is alive with the sound of cicadas. Afternoon: visit a Matsigenka indigenous community. The Matsigenka have inhabited the headwaters of the Manu for thousands of years, and their traditional knowledge of medicinal plants is encyclopedic — ethnobotanists have documented over 200 plant species they use. Participate in a workshop on traditional crafts and archery. Farewell dinner at the lodge with the sounds of the rainforest as your soundtrack. Overnight in Manu Wildlife Center.

Day 6: Return to Cusco

Dawn departure by canoe, followed by the overland journey back across the Andes. Arrive Cusco by evening. Transfer to your hotel or airport.
