Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Manaus — Arrival & City Discovery

Arrive in Manaus. City tour: Teatro Amazonas, Mercado Municipal, and the Rio Negro Palace. Visit the MUSA garden. Welcome dinner with Amazonian specialties. Overnight at a 4-star hotel.

Day 2: Into the Jungle — Expedition Ship Departure

Board a traditional Amazon riverboat (your floating home for the next several days) at Manaus port. Cruise up the Rio Negro, passing the Meeting of the Waters. Afternoon: first canoe excursion into the flooded forest. Spot river dolphins, sloths, and numerous bird species as you settle into the rhythm of river life. Moor overnight in a quiet bay. The stars reflected on the black water are breathtaking.

Day 3: Anavilhanas Archipelago

Dawn canoe among the 400+ islands of the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the world’s largest river archipelago. The morning mist rising from the black water creates an ethereal atmosphere. After breakfast, a challenging jungle trek on one of the larger islands — primary rainforest with enormous trees and abundant wildlife. Afternoon: kayak through narrow channels between islands, observing giant river otters, turtles, and caimans. Night spotlighting for caimans and night birds.

Day 4: Remote Tributary Expedition

Navigate up a narrow tributary of the Rio Negro, far from any tourist routes. This area sees almost no visitors. Full day of exploration: jungle trekking, canoeing deeper into the tributary, and wildlife observation. Your guides include an indigenous tracker who can read the forest like a book — pointing out jaguar tracks, identifying bird calls, and showing you medicinal plants. Camp overnight in hammocks near a small riverside settlement.

Day 5: Indigenous Community Deep Immersion

Spend the entire day with an indigenous Tucano community. Learn about their cosmology — the Tucano believe the Rio Negro was created by a giant anaconda. Participate in daily activities: cassava processing, fishing with traditional traps, and preparing food. Afternoon: participate in a yagé (ayahuasca) information session — learning about the cultural and spiritual significance of this sacred plant medicine (no consumption required). Evening around the fire for storytelling and traditional music.

Day 6: Return to Main River — New Territory

Morning farewell to the community. Continue up the Rio Negro to a new area. Afternoon: visit a clay lick where hundreds of parrots, parakeets, and macaws gather to eat mineral-rich clay — a spectacular display of color and sound. The science is fascinating: the clay neutralizes toxins in the seeds the birds eat. Moor at a remote location for the night.

Day 7: Jau National Park (UNESCO)

Enter Jau National Park, the largest forest reserve in South America (2.27 million hectares) and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This park represents one of the most pristine areas of the Amazon. Trek into primary forest with a park ranger. The biodiversity here is staggering — up to 400 tree species per hectare. Spot Amazonian manatees (an endangered species), giant armadillos, and the rare uakari monkey with its bright red face. Overnight in the park.

Day 8: Jau Deep Exploration

Full day exploring Jau. Morning: trek to a remote lake known for giant river otter sightings. These “wolves of the river” can reach 2m in length and hunt in family groups. Afternoon: canoe up a narrow blackwater creek — the silence, broken only by bird calls and the sound of your paddle, is profound. Night: try to spot the tapir and the black caiman (the largest predator in the Amazon after the jaguar).

Day 9: Return Journey — New Route

Begin the return journey downriver, but taking a different route through lesser-explored channels. Visit a rubber tapper community and learn about the history of the rubber boom and the legacy of Chico Mendes, the activist murdered for defending the rainforest. Afternoon: relaxed canoe trip focusing on photography and birdwatching. Moor at a scenic location for the night.

Day 10: Sustainable Forest Products Workshop

Visit a community-managed forest reserve where sustainable harvesting of Brazil nuts, açaí berries, and andiroba oil supports local livelihoods without deforestation. Participate in harvesting and processing. Afternoon: tree planting activity — plant your own Amazon tree as part of the operator’s reforestation program. These trees are tracked and you’ll receive updates on their growth. Farewell celebration on the boat.

Day 11: Return to Manaus

Final morning on the river. Sail back to Manaus, savoring the last views of the rainforest from the water. Afternoon: visit the Jaú Ecological Station visitor center and the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve on the outskirts of Manaus — a final opportunity to walk in the forest. Farewell dinner in Manaus featuring a tasting menu of Amazonian ingredients prepared by a renowned local chef.

Day 12: Departure

Morning visit to the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa for last souvenirs. Transfer to airport. Twelve days in the Amazon is a life-changing experience. You leave with a profound understanding of why this ecosystem is called “the lungs of the Earth” — and the responsibility we all share to protect it.
