Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Cap-Haïtien — Arrival in the Paris of the Antilles
Arrive at Cap-Haïtien International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in this historic city, once known as the “Paris of the Antilles” for its French colonial architecture and wealthy sugar plantations. Afternoon orientation walk through the city: the Place d’Armes, the 18th-century cathedral Notre-Dame du Cap-Haïtien, and the colorful streets of the old town. Welcome dinner featuring Haitian cuisine — griot (fried pork), diri ak djon djon (rice with black mushrooms), and pikliz (spicy pickled vegetables).
Day 2: Citadelle Laferrière & Sans Souci Palace
The highlight of your journey. Drive through the lush northern countryside to Milot, the village at the base of the mountain. Here, horses await for the ascent to the Citadelle Laferrière — the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere. The 45-minute horseback ride winds through tropical vegetation with increasingly spectacular views. At 900m elevation, the Citadelle appears like a stone battleship on the mountain peak. Built between 1805-1820 under King Henri Christophe, this UNESCO World Heritage fortress was designed to defend Haiti’s hard-won independence. Explore the massive stone walls, 365 cannons (many still in place), cannonball pyramids, and the king’s quarters. The 360-degree panorama from the top takes in the Caribbean coastline, the mountains, and on clear days, Cuba. Descend to explore Sans Souci Palace, King Christophe’s Versailles-inspired residence with its grand staircase, formal gardens, and haunting ruins. Local lunch with traditional music. Return to Cap-Haïtien.
Day 3: Île à Rat & Northern Coastline
Morning boat excursion to Île à Rat, a small island paradise just off the northern coast. White sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, and excellent snorkeling on shallow coral reefs. Fresh seafood lunch on the beach — grilled lobster, conch, and plantains. Afternoon: visit Fort Picolet, a smaller but impressive colonial fortress guarding the bay of Cap-Haïtien. Watch the sunset from the ramparts. Evening: explore the local art scene in Cap-Haïtien’s galleries, known for vibrant Haitian paintings.
Day 4: Fort Liberté & Bassin Bleu
Day trip east to Fort Liberté, one of Haiti’s best-preserved colonial towns. Visit Fort Dauphin, a Spanish-built fortress with massive walls overlooking the bay. Continue inland to the spectacular Bassin Bleu — a series of four cobalt-blue pools connected by waterfalls, hidden in the jungle near Jacmel. The most famous, Bassin Clair, requires a short hike and a rope-assisted descent. The water is impossibly blue, cool, and refreshing. Swim in the pools, slide down natural rock formations into the water, and relax in this tropical paradise. Return to Cap-Haïtien in the evening.
Day 5: Cap-Haïtien Art & Departure
Morning visit to the Marché de Fer (Iron Market), Cap-Haïtien’s vibrant central market. Browse Haitian art — naive paintings, metal sculptures cut from oil drums, and intricate beadwork. Visit a local artist’s studio to understand the techniques and symbolism of Haitian art. Transfer to the airport. You leave having experienced the proud history of the world’s first Black republic and the incredible fortress that symbolizes Haitian resilience.
