Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: N’Djamena — Charter to Zakouma
Arrive N’Djamena. Charter flight (2 hours) to Zakouma National Park — one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories. Since African Parks took over management in 2010, elephant poaching has been virtually eliminated and wildlife populations are recovering spectacularly. Afternoon: settle into Tinga Camp, your base. Evening game drive introduction. Overnight at Tinga Camp.
Days 2-5: Zakouma Safari — Africa’s Wild Heart
Four full days of safari in this 3,000 km² wilderness. Zakouma’s wildlife highlights:
- Elephants: Zakouma’s elephant population is legendary — over 500 individuals gather in massive herds, a sight rivalled by few other places in Africa. The dry season elephant concentration at the Salamat River is one of Africa’s great wildlife spectacles
- Big Cats: Healthy lion prides patrol the savanna; Zakouma has one of Central Africa’s highest lion densities. Leopards are common in the woodland areas
- Giraffes: Kordofan giraffes — a critically endangered subspecies — thrive here, with one of their largest remaining populations
- Buffalo & Antelope: Massive herds of buffalo, tiang (topi), Lelwel hartebeest, roan antelope, and Defassa waterbuck
- Birds: Over 380 species — winter sees massive flocks of quelea, crowned cranes, and Abyssinian ground hornbills. The floodplains teem with storks, pelicans, and herons during the dry season
- Night Drives: Spot servals, genets, honey badgers, and the rare pale fox
Accommodation: Tinga Camp (comfortable en-suite thatched chalets) with a swimming pool for midday heat. Picnic breakfasts and sundowners in the bush.
Day 6: Final Safari — Return to N’Djamena
Dawn game drive for last wildlife encounters. Charter flight back to N’Djamena. Afternoon: city tour — Grande Mosquée, Central Market, Artisanal Center. Farewell dinner at Le Carnivore restaurant. Overnight in N’Djamena.
Day 7: Depart
Airport transfer. You’ve experienced one of Africa’s most extraordinary and least-visited wildlife destinations.
