Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Yaoundé

Airport transfer. Brief city orientation. Overnight in Yaoundé.

Day 2: Yaoundé — Somalomo (Gateway to Dja)

Drive southeast through Cameroon’s lush forest zone to Somalomo, the gateway village to the Dja Faunal Reserve. Meet your Baka guides — indigenous forest people whose ancestors have lived in harmony with this rainforest for millennia. Overnight in Somalomo guesthouse.

Days 3-5: Dja Faunal Reserve — Rainforest Immersion

Three days deep in the 5,260 km² Dja Reserve (UNESCO World Heritage), one of Africa’s largest and best-protected rainforests. Activities include:

  • Forest walks with Baka trackers — learn traditional hunting techniques (demonstration only), medicinal plant identification, honey harvesting, and the Baka’s encyclopedic knowledge of the forest
  • Wildlife watching — 107 mammal species inhabit the reserve including forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, leopards, and giant pangolins
  • Bird watching — over 320 species including the grey-necked rockfowl and Bates’s paradise flycatcher
  • River excursions on the Dja River by pirogue — watch for sitatunga antelope, forest buffalo, and crocodiles
  • Evening Baka cultural experiences: traditional polyphonic singing (recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage), fireside storytelling, and spirit dances
  • Visit a Baka forest camp to understand their seasonal migration patterns, shelter construction, and forest-based lifestyle

Accommodation: forest camps with canvas tents and camp beds — a true expedition experience.

Day 6: Return to Yaoundé

Morning farewell with Baka community. Drive back to Yaoundé. Afternoon: visit Mvog-Betsi Zoo and the artisan market. Overnight in Yaoundé.

Day 7: Depart

Airport transfer.
