Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Sofia
Arrive at Sofia Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon guided tour of Sofia: the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, St. George Rotunda, the ruins of ancient Serdica, and the mineral water fountains that give Sofia its character. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant with live folk music. Overnight in Sofia.
Day 2: Sofia to Plovdiv — Bachkovo & Roman Legacy
Morning visit to Bachkovo Monastery, then continue to Plovdiv. Afternoon guided walking tour of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city: explore the Roman Theater (1st century AD), the Roman Stadium, the charming cobblestone streets of the Old Town with its colorful Revival-period houses, and the trendy Kapana neighborhood. Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 3: Plovdiv to Sozopol — Black Sea Coast
Depart Plovdiv for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Arrive in Sozopol, one of the oldest towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, founded by Greek colonists in 610 BC. Afternoon walking tour of the Old Town with its wooden houses, ancient fortress walls, and the Church of St. George. Enjoy the sandy beaches and relaxed seaside atmosphere. Overnight in Sozopol.
Day 4: Sozopol to Burgas — Nessebar UNESCO
Morning at leisure on Sozopol’s beaches. Midday transfer to Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage site on a rocky peninsula. Explore the town known as the “Pearl of the Black Sea” with its 40 churches from various historical periods, cobblestone streets, and traditional wooden houses. Continue to Burgas, Bulgaria’s fourth-largest city. Evening walk along the Sea Garden promenade. Overnight in Burgas.
Day 5: Burgas to Varna — Aladzha & Balchik
Depart Burgas north along the coast. Visit the Aladzha Monastery, a medieval Orthodox cave monastery carved into a 25-meter-high limestone cliff. Continue to Balchik to visit the stunning Balchik Palace and its beautiful Botanical Garden overlooking the Black Sea, once the summer residence of Romanian Queen Marie. Arrive in Varna, Bulgaria’s maritime capital. Overnight in Varna.
Day 6: Varna — Maritime Capital
Full day exploring Varna: visit the Archaeological Museum to see the world’s oldest processed gold treasure (Varna Necropolis, 4,600-4,200 BC). Tour the Roman Baths, the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, and the Naval Museum. Afternoon at leisure on Varna’s beaches or the Primorski Park. Evening seafood dinner at the port. Overnight in Varna.
Day 7: Varna to Veliko Tarnovo — Madara Rider
Morning visit to the Madara Rider, a UNESCO-listed 8th-century rock relief of a horseman carved into a 100-meter cliff — the only one of its kind in Europe. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo. Afternoon tour of Tsarevets Fortress and the medieval Patriarchal Church. Explore the charming Samovodska Charshia craft street. Farewell dinner with Bulgarian wine. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 8: Veliko Tarnovo to Sofia — Departure
Morning visit to Veliko Tarnovo’s Asenova Quarter and the Forty Martyrs Church. Transfer to Sofia Airport for departure. Carry home memories of golden beaches, ancient monasteries, medieval fortresses, and warm Bulgarian hospitality.
