The M41 Pamir Highway is one of the world’s most legendary drives — following ancient Silk Road routes across the “Roof of the World.” Over 15 days, journey from Dushanbe through the Wakhan Corridor to Lake Karakul, with the Hindu Kush and Afghan Pamirs as your constant companions.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1-2: Dushanbe
Arrival and acclimatization. Explore Dushanbe’s Soviet-meets-Persian architecture. Visit the world’s largest teahouse and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Day 3: Dushanbe to Kalai Khumb
Begin the Pamir Highway journey. Cross the Shurabad Pass into the Pamir Mountains. Reach Kalai Khumb on the Panj River — Afghanistan is just across the water.
Day 4-5: Wakhan Corridor
Enter the legendary Wakhan Valley. Visit the Yamchun Fortress (3rd century BCE), the Bibi Fatima hot springs, and ancient Buddhist stupas. The Hindu Kush forms a spectacular backdrop as you trace the Panj River border with Afghanistan.
Day 6: Langar & Petroglyphs
Explore Langar’s ancient petroglyphs — over 6,000 rock carvings dating from the Bronze Age. Visit the shrine of musicians who played for Marco Polo (legend has it).
Day 7-8: Murghab Plateau
Climb onto the Murghab Plateau, a high-altitude desert at 3,600m. Visit remote Kyrgyz herder communities. Photograph yaks grazing against a backdrop of 7,000m peaks.
Day 9-10: Lake Karakul
Reach Lake Karakul at 3,900m — a meteorite impact crater lake of incredible turquoise. Overnight in a traditional yurt with a Kyrgyz family. Sunrise over the lake with the 7,134m Lenin Peak in the distance.
Day 11: Ak-Baital Pass
Cross the Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655m — the highest point on the Pamir Highway and one of the highest road passes in the world.
Day 12: Jelandy Hot Springs & Khorog
Descend to Jelandy hot springs for a well-earned soak. Continue to Khorog, capital of Gorno-Badakhshan, and visit the Khorog Botanical Garden — the second highest in the world.
Day 13: Khorog & Ishkashim
Visit Afghan border village markets (Saturday cross-border market when possible). Explore Khorog’s lively bazaar and riverside promenade.
Day 14: Return to Dushanbe
Fly from Khorog to Dushanbe. Free afternoon for last-minute exploration and souvenir shopping.
Day 15: Departure
Airport transfer for international departure.
