Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Colombo — Transfer to Sigiriya

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. Your driver-guide greets you and heads straight to the Cultural Triangle. En route: visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where 80+ elephants — orphans, injured, and retired working elephants — bathe in the Maha Oya River. The sight of a herd of elephants splashing in the water as you watch from the bank is a magnificent introduction to Sri Lanka. Continue to Sigiriya. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Day 2: Sigiriya Lion Rock & Polonnaruwa

Dawn climb of Sigiriya (Lion Rock), the 5th-century fortress-palace rising 200m from the jungle on a massive granite monolith. King Kashyapa built his pleasure palace here after murdering his father — the guilt, perhaps, inspired the extraordinary frescoes of celestial nymphs (apsaras) that survive on a sheltered rock face halfway up. The final ascent passes between enormous lion paws carved into the rock — the only remains of a giant lion that ancient visitors would enter through. From the summit, jungle stretches to the horizon in every direction. Afternoon: cycle through the ruins of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s medieval capital. The Gal Vihara — four Buddha statues carved from a single granite wall in the 12th century — is one of the finest examples of Buddhist sculpture anywhere. Overnight in Sigiriya.

Day 3: Dambulla & Kandy

Morning at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a series of five caves transformed into a massive temple complex in the 1st century BC. Inside: 153 Buddha statues and ceiling frescoes covering 2,100 square meters — the largest painted surface of any cave temple in the world. Climb the golden Buddha stairway for views over the plains. Continue to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital, through spice gardens where cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper grow. Evening: attend a Kandyan dance performance — drummers, fire-walkers, and dancers in elaborate silver headdresses performing the ancient rituals of the Kandyan kingdom. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 4: Temple of the Tooth & Royal Botanic Gardens

Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), Buddhism’s holiest site in Sri Lanka. The tooth, said to be Buddha’s left canine, was smuggled from India in the hair of a princess in the 4th century AD. See the puja ceremony with drummers and the opening of the inner chamber. Afternoon: Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens (1821), 147 acres of tropical paradise — the palm avenue, orchid house, and the giant Java willow tree that covers 2,500 square meters are highlights. Evening: Kandy Lake at sunset. Overnight in Kandy.

Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya — Tea Country

Scenic train ride to Nuwara Eliya. The railway was built by British planters in the 19th century to transport tea from the highlands to Colombo. The winding route through misty mountains, past tea plantations cascading down impossibly steep slopes, is one of the world’s great train journeys. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya, known as “Little England” — the town resembles a British village transplanted to the tropics, complete with a golf course, a racecourse, and Tudor-style buildings. Visit a tea factory to see how leaves become Ceylon tea and taste the famous “orange pekoe.” Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 6: Horton Plains & Yala National Park

Pre-dawn departure to Horton Plains National Park (2,100m). The 9km hike across montane grasslands and cloud forest leads to World’s End — an 880m sheer cliff where the plateau drops abruptly. At dawn, the view stretches to the southern coast; by mid-morning, clouds roll in and the world literally ends in white mist. Continue south to Yala National Park for an afternoon jeep safari. Yala has the highest leopard density of any national park in the world — along with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. Overnight near Yala.

Day 7: South Coast — Galle Fort

Drive along the southern coast. Stop at a stilt fisherman spot — if you’re lucky, men still perch on wooden poles driven into the reef, fishing as their ancestors did. Continue to Galle Fort, a 16th-century Portuguese bastion expanded by the Dutch into a perfectly preserved colonial town of cobblestone lanes, pastel churches, and boutique cafes within massive rampart walls. Walk the ramparts at sunset — the Indian Ocean crashes against the walls, a lighthouse stands sentinel, and cricket matches unfold on the green inside the fort. It’s one of the most atmospheric places in Asia. Overnight in Galle Fort.

Day 8: Colombo & Depart

Drive to Colombo. Brief city tour: the Gangaramaya Temple, the colonial-era Galle Face Green promenade, and a final Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch. Transfer to airport.
