Itinerary Highlights
Days 1-2: Cultural Triangle
Colombo → Sigiriya. Pinnawala Elephants, Sigiriya Lion Rock at dawn, cycling through Polonnaruwa’s medieval ruins, and the Dambulla Cave Temples.
Day 3: Anuradhapura — The Sacred City
Explore Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first capital (4th century BC). The Sri Maha Bodhi — a fig tree grown from a cutting of the original tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment — is the oldest historically documented tree on Earth (2,300+ years). The Ruwanwelisaya stupa, 103m tall and built in 140 BC, is one of the world’s oldest and largest stupas.
Days 4-5: Kandy
Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya Gardens, Kandyan cultural show. Day 5 scenic train to Nuwara Eliya through tea country — plantations, waterfalls, and misty highlands.
Day 6: Ella — The Mountain Village
Trek to Little Adam’s Peak for views over the Ella Gap — a valley running through the mountains to the southern plains. Cross the Nine Arch Bridge, a 1920s railway bridge of stone and brick hidden in dense jungle — when the train emerges from the forest, passengers lean out of open doors, a photographer’s dream.
Day 7: Yala & Udawalawe
Morning safari in Udawalawe National Park (elephants guaranteed — the park has over 400). Afternoon leopard safari in Yala. Two parks in one day gives you the best chance of seeing Sri Lanka’s “Big Five.”
Day 8: South Coast — Mirissa & Weligama
Whale watching from Mirissa (blue whales, November-April). Afternoon: learn to surf at Weligama’s beginner-friendly beach break.
Day 9: Galle Fort Day
Full day in Galle Fort: ramparts, lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church, Maritime Museum, boutique shopping, and a curry cooking class in a colonial house.
Days 10-11: Bentota & Colombo
Relax on Bentota’s golden beaches. Day 11: Colombo city tour — Pettah markets, the Dutch Period Museum, and Ministry of Crab for a celebratory dinner (ranked among Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants). Farewell Sri Lanka.
Day 12: Depart
Transfer to airport.
