Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Welcome to Mongolia — the Land of Eternal Blue Sky! Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Ulaanbaatar (UB), the world’s coldest capital city where Soviet-era architecture meets modern development. Rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar City Discovery

• Gandan Monastery — Mongolia’s largest and most important Buddhist monastery. Marvel at the 26.5m-tall gold-plated statue of Migjid Janraisig (Avalokitesvara), rebuilt in 1996 after the original was destroyed during communist purges in 1937
• Sukhbaatar Square — The central square dominated by an equestrian statue of Damdin Sukhbaatar, the hero of Mongolia’s 1921 revolution, and the massive Government Palace with its Chinggis Khaan monument
• National Museum of Mongolia — Journey through Mongolia’s 800,000-year history from prehistoric times through the Great Mongol Empire to modern democracy. See traditional costumes, ancient artifacts, and the story of the world’s largest contiguous empire

Day 3: Elsen Tasarkhai — Mini Gobi Sand Dunes

Drive 280km west to Elsen Tasarkhai — a stunning 80km-long strip of golden sand dunes stretching across the green steppe. This “Mini Gobi” offers a perfect introduction to Mongolia’s desert landscapes without the long journey south. Activities:

• Camel Ride — Ride a two-humped Bactrian camel across the dunes, just as Silk Road caravans did for millennia
• Sand Dune Hiking — Climb to the top of the dunes for spectacular views of sand meeting steppe meeting mountain
• Nomad Family Visit — Experience genuine Mongolian hospitality in a traditional ger (yurt). Learn how nomads make airag (fermented mare’s milk) and dairy products. Share a meal with the family and understand their timeless way of life

Day 4: Karakorum — Ancient Capital of the Mongol Empire

Continue 90km to Karakorum, on the UNESCO-listed Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape. From 1235-1260, this was the capital of the Mongol Empire — the largest contiguous land empire in history. Visit:

• Erdene Zuu Monastery — Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery (1586), built from the ruins of Karakorum itself. Walk through the 108 stupas surrounding the complex, explore three main temples with exquisite Buddhist art, and learn about its survival through communist destruction
• Karakorum Museum — Small but world-class museum showcasing the city’s 13th-century glory with artifacts from the Mongol Empire period, including a scale model of ancient Karakorum and finds from archaeological excavations
• Stone Turtles — The only surviving above-ground monuments from the original city — four stone turtle sculptures that once marked the boundaries of the imperial capital
• Orkhon River Valley — Walk through the cradle of Mongolian civilization, where Turkic inscriptions from the 8th century (the Orkhon Inscriptions) record some of the oldest known Turkic writing

Day 5: Hustai National Park — Wild Horses

Drive 270km to Hustai National Park, home to the world’s only truly wild horse — the Przewalski’s horse (takhi). These horses were extinct in the wild by 1969 but have been successfully reintroduced to their Mongolian homeland since 1992. Today over 400 takhi roam freely here.

• Wild Horse Viewing — Search for takhi herds with a park ranger. Unlike domesticated horses, these sturdy, dun-colored animals with erect manes are the ancestors of all modern horses
• Wildlife Spotting — The park also hosts red deer, Mongolian gazelle, marmots, and over 220 bird species including the majestic cinereous vulture
• Hiking Trails — Explore the forest-steppe landscape with its unique biodiversity

Day 6: Terelj National Park — Alpine Paradise

Drive 160km to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, one of Mongolia’s most beautiful protected areas. Towering granite rock formations, alpine forests, and flower-filled meadows. Activities:

• Turtle Rock (Melkhii Khad) — The park’s iconic 24m-high granite formation resembling a giant turtle
• Aryabal Meditation Temple — A Tibetan Buddhist temple perched dramatically on a hillside, reached by climbing 108 steps (a sacred Buddhist number). Panoramic views of the entire park
• Horse Riding — Ride across the alpine meadows on sturdy Mongolian horses — direct descendants of the warhorses that carried Chinggis Khaan’s warriors across Asia

Day 7: Return to Ulaanbaatar, Departure

Morning at leisure in Terelj — optional short hike or horse ride. Return to Ulaanbaatar (55km). Last-minute shopping for cashmere, traditional crafts, and souvenirs at the State Department Store or Narantuul Market. Transfer to airport. Bayartai — goodbye from the Land of Blue Sky!
