Day 1: Arrive Catania — Baroque City at Etna’s Foot

Land at Catania Fontanarossa Airport. Catania, Sicily’s second city, is built from the very lava it fears — its Baroque buildings are constructed from black volcanic stone and white limestone. Your guide meets you and transfers to your hotel. Afternoon: walk through the Piazza del Duomo with its lava elephant fountain (u Liotru, the city’s symbol), Via Etnea (the main street pointing straight at Mount Etna), and the fish market (La Pescheria) — a raucous, blood-on-the-ice affair where swordfish heads are arranged like trophies and vendors sing prices in dialect. Welcome dinner at a trattoria near the Ursino Castle. Overnight in Catania.

Day 2: Mount Etna — Summit & Volcanic Wines

Full day on Europe’s most active volcano. Morning cable car to 2,500m, then 4×4 to the summit crater area (2,900m). Walk the lunar landscape of black lava fields, steaming vents, and the ever-changing summit craters. Etna added 30m in height between 2021-2023 from eruptive activity. The views encompass the entire Ionian coast of Sicily. Afternoon: visit an Etna DOC winery — the Nerello Mascalese grape grows on terraces cut into lava flows, producing elegant red wines with distinctive minerality. Taste alongside Sicilian cheeses. Overnight at a wine resort on Etna.

Day 3: Taormina — The Pearl of Sicily

Morning: Taormina’s Teatro Greco (3rd century BC) — one of the world’s most stunning ancient theaters, with Mount Etna as its backdrop. Walk the Corso Umberto, visit the public gardens, and swim at Isola Bella. Afternoon free for shopping, gelato, or the cable car to the beach below. Evening: sunset aperitivo on a panoramic terrace. Overnight in Taormina.

Day 4: Syracuse — Ancient Greek Capital

Drive south to Syracuse. Morning: Neapolis Archaeological Park — the Greek Theatre (138m diameter, Aeschylus premiered here), the Ear of Dionysius cave, and the Roman amphitheater. Afternoon: Ortigia island — the Duomo built inside the Temple of Athena (2,500 years of worship), the Arethusa Spring where papyrus grows wild, and the medieval lanes of the Jewish Quarter. Overnight in Ortigia, Syracuse.

Day 5: Ragusa & Modica — Baroque Masterpieces

Morning: Modica — the gorge city rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, famous for Aztec-method chocolate still made in stone grinding mills. Taste at Antica Dolceria Bonajuto (1880). Afternoon: Ragusa Ibla, a hilltop Baroque masterpiece — the Duomo di San Giorgio (1739-1775) by Rosario Gagliardi is Sicily’s finest Baroque church. Walk the winding streets and hidden piazzas. Overnight in Ragusa Ibla.

Day 6: Agrigento — Valley of the Temples

Morning drive inland to Agrigento (UNESCO). The Valley of the Temples is the world’s largest archaeological site and the most complete Greek temple complex outside Greece. Walk the Via Sacra past the Temple of Concordia (perfectly preserved, 430 BC), Temple of Hercules, and Temple of Zeus Olympios. Sunset among these 2,500-year-old ruins, with views to the Mediterranean, is the highlight of any Sicily trip. Overnight in Agrigento.

Day 7: Erice & Palermo — West Sicily

Morning: Erice, the medieval hilltown at 751m with 360-degree views. Visit the Norman castle and the Genovesi pastry shop. Afternoon: drive to Palermo. Explore the Cathedral, the Palatine Chapel’s magnificent mosaics, and the Ballaro street market. Farewell dinner at a Palermitan trattoria. Overnight in Palermo.

Day 8: Departure

Morning at leisure for Monreale Cathedral (the 6,340 sq m of gold mosaics, 13m Christ Pantocrator) — the perfect final image of Sicily. Transfer to Palermo Airport.
