Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Montserrat — The Emerald Isle

Arrive via 20-minute flight from Antigua or ferry. Montserrat is nicknamed the Emerald Isle for its lush green hills and Irish heritage — it’s the only country outside Ireland to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a national holiday. Transfer to your guesthouse in the north of the island (the south remains in the Exclusion Zone). Welcome dinner with traditional goat water (Montserrat’s national stew). Overnight in northern Montserrat.

Day 2: Soufrière Hills Volcano Observatory

Visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), one of the most advanced volcano monitoring stations in the world. Scientists explain how the Soufrière Hills Volcano, which began erupting in 1995 and devastated the capital Plymouth, continues to be monitored 24/7. View the steaming lava dome and the ash-covered remains of Plymouth — the modern-day Pompeii of the Caribbean. Afternoon: hike to Jack Boy Hill for the best land-based view of the volcano, the abandoned airport, and the buried city. Overnight in northern Montserrat.

Day 3: Centre Hills & Oriole Walkway

Full day exploring the Centre Hills, Montserrat’s protected rainforest reserve. Hike the Oriole Walkway searching for the Montserrat oriole — the national bird and critically endangered, with only a few hundred remaining. Birdwatch for the Montserrat galliwasp, the Antillean crested hummingbird, and the forest thrush. Visit Runaway Ghaut, a natural spring where, according to legend, drinking the water ensures you’ll return to Montserrat. Afternoon: visit studios where international musicians (Sting, Paul McCartney, Elton John) recorded at the legendary AIR Studios before the volcano. Overnight in northern Montserrat.

Day 4: Black Sand Beaches & Irish Heritage

Morning at Woodlands Beach — Montserrat’s only white sand beach, on the north coast. Afternoon at Little Bay, the new capital-in-progress with its black volcanic sand beach and excellent snorkeling. Visit the Montserrat National Trust and the Montserrat Cultural Centre to learn about the island’s unique Afro-Irish heritage — Irish indentured servants and enslaved Africans created a culture unlike any other. Evening: farewell dinner with Irish-Montserrat fusion cuisine. Overnight in northern Montserrat.

Day 5: Depart Montserrat

Morning visit to the Montserrat Hilltop Coffee House for panoramic views of Antigua, Redonda, and Nevis on a clear day. Transfer to airport.
