Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive N’Djamena — Chad’s Capital
Arrive at N’Djamena International Airport. Chad is one of Africa’s least visited countries — and one of its most rewarding for adventurous travelers. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon: explore N’Djamena — visit the Grand Marché, the National Museum (with a 7-million-year-old Sahelanthropus skull — one of our earliest human ancestors, discovered in Chad), and the Grand Mosque. Evening welcome dinner. Overnight in N’Djamena.
Day 2: Lake Chad — Africa’s Shrinking Giant
Full-day excursion to Lake Chad (about 2 hours from N’Djamena). Once one of Africa’s largest lakes (the size of Lake Erie in the 1960s), Lake Chad has shrunk by 90% — a stark lesson in climate change. Take a traditional boat through the floating islands of papyrus to fishing villages built on stilts. See the remarkable adaptation of communities living on and around the lake. Birdwatching: millions of migratory birds use Lake Chad as a stopover. Overnight in N’Djamena.
Day 3: Fly to Ennedi — Sahara’s Grand Canyon
Charter flight to the Ennedi Massif in northeastern Chad (or 4×4 convoy, 2 days). Ennedi is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Sahara’s most spectacular landscapes. Arrive at the Ennedi camp. Evening walk to a nearby rock arch — the Guelta d’Archei is one of the most famous waterholes in the Sahara. Overnight at Ennedi camp.
Day 4: Ennedi — Aloba Arch & Desert Elephants
Full day exploring Ennedi. Hike to the Aloba Arch — at 120m, it’s one of the world’s largest natural arches, dwarfing anything in Utah’s Arches National Park. The landscape is surreal: sandstone pillars, natural bridges, and maze-like canyons carved by millennia of wind and water. Visit the Guelta d’Archei, a permanent waterhole in the desert where the last Sahara crocodiles survive — a remnant from when the Sahara was green savanna 10,000 years ago. If lucky, spot desert-adapted camels being watered by Tubu nomads. Overnight at Ennedi camp.
Day 5: Ennedi — Rock Art of the Green Sahara
Full day exploring Ennedi’s rock art — thousands of petroglyphs and paintings dating back 7,000 years. The art depicts the Green Sahara: elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, and cattle grazing in what is now barren desert. Visit the Niola Doa site, featuring massive figures of women engraved into the rock — some of the largest prehistoric rock art in Africa. Visit the Terkei cattle paintings, some of the finest examples of the “Bovidian period” when pastoralism dominated the Sahara. Overnight at Ennedi camp.
Day 6: Ennedi — Bachikele & The Labyrinth
Explore the southern reaches of Ennedi. Hike through the Bachikele canyon, a labyrinth of sandstone corridors with hidden rock art panels. Visit the Mourdi Depression, a vast salt pan that was once a massive lake. Afternoon: drive to the Ounianga Lakes. Overnight at Ounianga camp.
Day 7: Ounianga Lakes — Sahara’s Miracle
Full day at the Lakes of Ounianga (UNESCO World Heritage) — 18 interconnected lakes in the heart of the Sahara, fed by an underground aquifer dating from when the Sahara was wet. The lakes range from bright blue to emerald green, surrounded by palm groves and sand dunes. Swim in Lake Yoan (freshwater), surrounded by 100m-high sand dunes. Visit the two villages on the lake shores and learn how the Tubu people have survived in this extreme environment for millennia. Overnight at Ounianga camp.
Day 8: Return to N’Djamena
Morning at the lakes. Afternoon charter flight to N’Djamena. Evening at leisure. Overnight in N’Djamena.
Day 9: Gaoui Village & Traditional Chad
Morning excursion to Gaoui, a traditional Sao village near N’Djamena famous for its painted pottery and distinctive domed mud-brick architecture. Visit a traditional chief’s compound. Afternoon: cooking class learning Chadian dishes (daraba stew, boule, kissar). Farewell dinner. Overnight in N’Djamena.
Day 10: Depart Chad
Morning market visit. Transfer to airport.
