Day 1: Arrival in Echternach — Luxembourg’s Oldest Town

Arrive independently at Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town on the banks of the River Sure. Meet your expert hiking guide for a welcome briefing over local cremant. This afternoon, explore Echternach on a gentle orientation walk. Visit the magnificent 7th-century Basilica of St. Willibrord with its Romanesque crypt containing the saint’s sarcophagus, and stroll the atmospheric market square lined with medieval merchants’ houses. Day 2: Echternach to Mullerthal — Rock Formations & Gorges (22.3 km)

After a hearty breakfast, begin the most dramatic stage of the Mullerthal Trail. From Echternach, you immediately step into the fairytale landscape of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland. The trail winds through famous sandstone rock formations, narrow passages between moss-covered boulders, and mysterious shaded ravines. Pass through the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf’s Gorge) and the spectacular Hohllay Cave, an ancient underground quarry where millstones were once carved from the rock. The route alternates between intense natural beauty in dark rock canyons and bright panoramic viewpoints over the Sure Valley. After approximately 6 hours of hiking with ample photo stops and a picnic lunch among the rocks, arrive at the village of Mullerthal, nestled in the heart of this dramatic landscape. Check into Hotel-Restaurant Le Cigalon. Evening at leisure, perhaps a short walk to the Schiessentumpel waterfall, where a picturesque stone bridge arches over a three-tiered cascade.

Day 3: Mullerthal to Echternach via Berdorf — Cliffs & Forests (15.4 km)

Today’s trail takes you from Mullerthal through dense beech and oak forests past the village of Berdorf, famous for its striking sandstone cliffs rising up to 40 meters. Explore the extraordinary rock labyrinth of Perekop, where erosion has created a maze of deep fissures, narrow corridors, and towering pillars. The path winds between ancient boulders cloaked in brilliant green moss, crosses clear forest streams, and occasionally opens to reveal wide, scenic views across the rolling Luxembourgish countryside. A gourmet picnic is served at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Sure Valley. Continue through peaceful woodland paths back to Echternach, arriving in the late afternoon. Day 4: Echternach Abbey & Departure
