6-Day Chuuk Lagoon: The World’s Greatest Wreck Diving Destination

Day 1: Arrive Chuuk — Dive Briefing

Arrive at Chuuk International Airport on Weno Island. Transfer to Blue Lagoon Resort — the legendary dive resort on the lagoon’s edge. Afternoon dive shop check-in, equipment fitting, and comprehensive briefing on Chuuk’s wrecks: their history, layout, penetration points, and safety protocols. Most wrecks are accessible to Open Water divers with some experience. Evening watching the sun set over the lagoon — knowing what lies beneath. Overnight Blue Lagoon Resort.

Day 2: The Classics — Fujikawa Maru & Shinkoku Maru

Two-tank dive day on Chuuk’s most iconic wrecks. Morning: Fujikawa Maru — the ‘Queen of the Lagoon.’ This 133m armed transport sits upright at 37m. Penetrate the cargo holds to find Zero fighter plane fuselages and wings. The forward mast is encrusted in soft corals at 18m — one of the most photogenic wreck scenes in the world. Afternoon: Shinkoku Maru — a 152m oil tanker sitting upright. The forward medical bay still contains medicine bottles and bone saws. The upper decks at 12-18m are covered in anemones, soft corals, and schooling fish — a photographer’s dream. Overnight resort.

Day 3: Deep Treasures — San Francisco Maru & Nippo Maru

Advanced divers’ day (tech diving option available). Morning: San Francisco Maru — the ‘Million Dollar Wreck’ at 50-64m. This 117m cargo ship still carries its deadly cargo: three Type 95 Ha-Go tanks on the deck, plus trucks, mines, and ammunition in the holds. One of the world’s most spectacular deep wrecks. Afternoon: Nippo Maru — a 107m cargo ship at 30-47m featuring a tank on deck, field artillery pieces, and anti-aircraft guns. Surface interval on a nearby atoll beach. Overnight resort.

Day 4: Planes, Subs & Varied Wrecks

Mixed-depth day. Morning: Betty Bomber — a Mitsubishi G4M bomber resting intact at 15-20m in the shallow lagoon. Perfect for underwater photography. Afternoon: Heian Maru — at 108m, the largest ship in the lagoon. This submarine tender rests on its port side at 10-36m. Penetrate the cavernous cargo holds and engine room. Optional third shallow dive: Yamagiri Maru’s engine room with massive reciprocating engines. Overnight resort.

Day 5: Weno Island & Chuuk Culture

Land day or optional recreational diving. Morning visit to Weno Island: the Xavier High School (housed in a former Japanese communications center), Nefo Cave (Japanese tunnel/coastal gun complex), and the local market. Afternoon cultural interaction at a Chuukese village: traditional dance, navigation lore, and the unique lagoon lifestyle. Farewell dinner overlooking the world’s greatest wreck collection. Overnight resort.

Day 6: Departure

Morning at leisure (24-hour no-fly time). Last walk on the lagoon shore. Transfer to airport for the continuing island-hopper flight.
