Day 1: Maun to the Delta — Mokoro Journey Begins
Depart Maun, Botswana’s gateway to the Okavango. Transfer 1 hour by 4×4 to the mokoro station on the edge of the permanent Delta. Meet your local poler — a BaYei tribesman whose ancestors navigated these waters for centuries. Load the mokoros and glide silently into the papyrus-lined channels. Watch for malachite kingfishers diving, African fish eagles calling overhead, and lily-trotting jacanas stepping daintily across floating vegetation. After 2-3 hours of peaceful poling, arrive at your remote island camp. Help set up dome tents while your guide prepares dinner over an open fire. Fall asleep to the symphony of hippos grunting and lions roaring in the distance.
Day 2: Walking Safari & Delta Exploration
Wake before sunrise to the chorus of birds — the Okavango hosts over 400 species. After a bush breakfast, set out on foot with an armed professional guide. Walking safaris offer an entirely different perspective: learn to read tracks, identify medicinal plants, and approach giraffes and zebras at ground level. The Okavango’s islands are home to elephant, buffalo, red lechwe, tsessebe, and predators including lion and leopard. Return to camp for lunch and siesta during the heat of the day. Afternoon mokoro excursion to explore deeper channels, possibly encountering hippos wallowing in lagoons. Sunset on the water is pure magic — golden light reflecting off lily-covered pools.
Day 3: Sunrise Game Walk & Return to Maun
Final dawn game walk — the bush is most alive in the cool morning hours. Track fresh spoor from overnight visitors to your camp. After breakfast, break camp and pole back to the mokoro station. Transfer to Maun, carrying memories of one of Africa’s last true wilderness experiences.
