Visit the 16th-century São Sebastião Fortress (now the National Museum), the vibrant Mercado Municipal, and the Sé Cathedral overlooking the bay. Day 2: Northern Cocoa Trail & Monte Café
Full-day exploration of São Tomé’s northern cocoa-growing region. Morning visit to Roça Agostinho Neto — once the world’s largest cocoa plantation, now a fascinating ghost estate where colonial ruins are being reclaimed by rainforest. Continue to Roça Diogo Vaz, an artisanal chocolate producer crafting award-winning single-origin chocolate. Tour the plantation by bike, learning the journey from cacao pod to chocolate bar, followed by an expert tasting. Afternoon visit to Monte Café, a historic coffee plantation perched in the mountains with spectacular views. Overnight São Tomé city.
Day 3: Fly to Príncipe — Africa’s Eden
Morning flight (35 minutes) to Príncipe Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of Africa’s last true Edens. Transfer to your eco-lodge set within a restored colonial roça. Afternoon orientation: visit Santo António, one of the world’s smallest and most charming colonial capitals, with its pastel-colored buildings and languid waterfront. Day 4: Príncipe Rainforest & Obo National Park
Full-day expedition into Príncipe’s pristine rainforest. Enter Obo National Park, a vast protected area of primary rainforest that’s home to endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Guided trek to hidden waterfalls — swim in emerald pools surrounded by ancient forest. Look for endemic birds: Príncipe kingfisher, Príncipe thrush, and the spectacular Príncipe golden weaver. The forest is alive with the calls of African grey parrots and the deep drumming of giant forest pigeons. Overnight Príncipe.
Day 5: Príncipe — Marine Adventures
Morning boat trip along Príncipe’s dramatic coastline — sea stacks, hidden coves, and pristine beaches accessible only by water. Snorkel the crystal-clear waters of Baía das Agulhas (Bay of Needles), where volcanic pinnacles rise from the sea floor. The waters around Príncipe teem with sea turtles, dolphins, and between July and September, humpback whales. Afternoon kayaking along the mangrove-fringed coastline. Day 6: Return to São Tomé — Southern Discovery
Morning flight back to São Tomé. Drive south along the dramatic eastern coastline. Stop at Boca de Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) — a spectacular blowhole where waves crash through a lava tube creating thunderous explosions of spray. Continue to the abandoned hospital at Roça Água Izé — an eerie colonial ruin overlooking the ocean. Arrive at São João dos Angolares, an artistic fishing village turned culinary destination. Day 7: Ilhéu das Rolas — Walking the Equator
Morning boat to Ilhéu das Rolas, a tiny island where the Equator line crosses. Stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern at the iconic monument. Swim from pristine beaches, snorkel over coral reefs, and hike to the lighthouse for panoramic views across the Gulf of Guinea. Afternoon return to São João dos Angolares. Evening cooking class with Chef João Carlos Silva — learn to prepare traditional Santomean dishes with a gourmet twist at his renowned restaurant. Overnight São João dos Angolares.
Day 8: Pico Cão Grande & Southern Rainforest
Journey to the island’s most dramatic landmark: Pico Cão Grande (Great Dog Peak) — a 663-meter phonolite needle rising vertically from the rainforest like a gigantic skyscraper. It’s one of Africa’s most surreal geological formations. Hike through the surrounding Obo National Park, crossing streams and climbing to viewpoints of this impossible rock spire. Afternoon visit to a palm wine tapping community to see the traditional art of collecting wine from palm trees. Overnight São João dos Angolares.
Day 9: Corallo Chocolate & Roça São João
Morning visit to Corallo Chocolate Factory, the island’s most famous chocolatier. Claudio Corallo, an Italian agronomist, produces some of the world’s finest chocolate from São Tomé beans — learn about his revolutionary fermentation techniques and taste chocolate that connoisseurs rank among the world’s best. Afternoon at Roça São João, a beautifully restored plantation offering insight into the island’s colonial past and chocolate-present future. Final afternoon at leisure — perhaps one last swim at Praia das Sete Ondas (Beach of Seven Waves). Farewell dinner. Overnight São Tomé city.
Day 10: Departure
Morning visit to the Mercado Municipal for final souvenirs — locally produced chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and woven baskets. Transfer to São Tomé International Airport for departure.
