Day 1: Cape Town to Oudtshoorn via Route 62
Depart Cape Town along Route 62 — South Africa’s answer to America’s Route 66. Wind through the Klein Karoo’s dramatic semi-desert landscapes, stopping at Ronnies Sex Shop (a quirky roadside pub, not what it sounds like) and Calitzdorp’s port wine estates. Arrive in Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world. Visit a working ostrich farm before a traditional South African braai dinner. Overnight in Oudtshoorn.
Day 2: Cango Caves & Knysna Heads
Morning exploration of the magnificent Cango Caves — Africa’s largest show cave system with towering limestone formations dating back 20 million years. Continue through the spectacular Outeniqua Pass to the Garden Route’s coastal belt. Arrive in Knysna, the jewel of the Garden Route. Afternoon visit to the Knysna Heads — two dramatic sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon entrance. Sunset cruise on the lagoon with views of the iconic Featherbed Nature Reserve. Overnight in Knysna.
Day 3: Tsitsikamma Forest & Storms River
Full day in Tsitsikamma National Park — a coastal wonderland of ancient indigenous forest, dramatic rocky coastline, and surging Indian Ocean. Walk the famous Storms River Mouth suspension bridge with waves crashing beneath your feet. Optional activities include kayaking up Storms River Gorge, the world’s highest bungee jump (216m at Bloukrans Bridge), or zip-lining through the forest canopy. Afternoon hike along the first section of the legendary Otter Trail. Overnight in Tsitsikamma.
Day 4: Addo Elephant National Park Safari
Early departure for Addo Elephant National Park — South Africa’s third-largest national park and home to over 600 elephants. Full-day game drive in open safari vehicles through diverse habitats from dense thicket to open plains. Beyond elephants, spot Cape buffalo, black rhino, lion, leopard, zebra, and the unique flightless dung beetle — all part of Addo’s Big Seven. Learn about the park’s remarkable conservation story: from just 11 elephants in 1931 to one of Africa’s greatest wildlife recovery success stories. Return to Port Elizabeth. Day 5: Port Elizabeth & Departure
Morning at leisure in Port Elizabeth — stroll the Boardwalk complex or visit the Donkin Reserve for panoramic bay views. Transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport for departure, carrying memories of elephants, ancient forests, and Africa’s most scenic coastline.
