Tohoku Winter Discovery: 6-Day Snow Monsters, Hot Springs & Samurai Heritage

Day 1: Tokyo to Zao — Winter Wonderland

Bullet train from Tokyo to Yamagata (2.5 hours). Transfer to Zao Onsen — one of Japan’s most famous hot spring and ski resorts. Afternoon at leisure exploring the steaming hot spring town where sulfuric waters have drawn visitors for 1,900 years. Evening onsen soak as snow falls gently around you. Overnight at a traditional ryokan with rotenburo (outdoor hot spring bath).

Day 2: Zao Snow Monsters & Snowshoe Trek

Morning: ride the Zao Ropeway to the summit (1,661m). At the top, enter a fantasy world — the legendary juhyo (Snow Monsters). These are Aomori fir trees completely encased in ice and snow by Siberian winds, creating monstrous white shapes up to 10 meters tall. The afternoon sun through the snow monsters creates an ethereal blue-white light. Afternoon: guided snowshoe trek through the quieter sections of the snow monster forest. Evening onsen and kaiseki dinner.

Day 3: Ginzan Onsen — Spirited Away in Snow

Journey to Ginzan Onsen — Japan’s most photogenic hot spring town. The wooden ryokan lining the Ginzan River, gas-lit bridges, and falling snow create a scene straight from a Miyazaki film. Walk along the snow-covered streets. Evening: the town’s gas lamps flicker on, reflecting in the river as snow falls — one of Japan’s most magical winter experiences. Overnight at a historic ryokan.

Day 4: Yamagata Sake & Winter Cuisine

Journey to Yamagata City. Morning visit to a sake brewery — Yamagata is one of Japan’s premier sake regions, known for clean, crisp sake made with local Dewa Sansan rice and pure mountain water. Guided tasting of junmai daiginjo and seasonal namazake (unpasteurized winter sake). Afternoon: explore Yamagata’s winter food scene — imoni (taro hot pot), local wagyu beef, and fresh mountain vegetables.

Day 5: Aizu-Wakamatsu — Last Samurai

Journey to Aizu-Wakamatsu — the samurai city that made Japan’s last stand against the Imperial army in 1868. Visit Tsuruga Castle (Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle) — its red-tiled keep a stunning contrast against winter snow. Explore the Aizu Bukeyashiki (samurai residence) — a reconstructed samurai mansion with 38 rooms showing samurai daily life. Afternoon: visit Ouchi-juku — a perfectly preserved Edo-period post town of thatched-roof houses, its streets deep in snow. Try negi soba — soba noodles eaten with a whole green onion used as a chopstick, a local tradition.

Day 6: Final Onsen & Return

Morning visit to Higashiyama Onsen for a final soak. The outdoor bath overlooks a snow-covered valley. Afternoon bullet train return to Tokyo. Arrive with memories of snow monsters, samurai castles, sake, and Japan’s most magical winter landscapes.
