The M41: Asia’s Most Epic Road
The M41 Pamir Highway stretches over 1,200km across the Roof of the World. This 10-day expedition follows its most spectacular section through the Wakhan Corridor, past ancient Silk Road fortresses, and across high-altitude plateaus where yaks outnumber people.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Dushanbe to Kalai Khumb
Depart Dushanbe early morning. Drive through the Tavildara Valley and over the Khaburabot Pass (3,252m) to Kalai Khumb on the Afghan border.
Day 2-3: Wakhan Valley
Two days exploring the Wakhan Corridor. Visit the 12th-century Yamchun Fortress, Bibi Fatima hot springs, Vrang Buddhist stupa (4th-7th century), and the Museum of Mubarak-i Wakhani. Walk through apricot orchards against a backdrop of 6,000m peaks.
Day 4: Langar to Murghab
Climb onto the Murghab Plateau. Photo stops at Shorbulak Pass for views of snow-covered Hindu Kush peaks. Arrive in Murghab town — the “Roof of the World” at 3,600m.
Day 5: Murghab Explorer
Day trip to the Pshart Valley, known for dramatic red rock formations and ancient petroglyphs. Visit a high-altitude meteorological station and meet Kyrgyz yak herders.
Day 6: Lake Karakul
Drive to Lake Karakul through the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655m). The lake, formed by a meteorite impact 10 million years ago, is one of the world’s highest and most beautiful. Overnight in a traditional yurt.
Day 7: Karakul to Jelandy
Morning exploration around Lake Karakul. Cross the Kyzyl-Art Pass. Afternoon arrival at Jelandy hot springs for a natural thermal bath under the stars.
Day 8: Khorog Arrival
Descend the Pamir River valley to Khorog. Visit the second-highest botanical garden in the world and Khorog’s lively Central Bazaar.
Day 9: Khorog to Dushanbe
Scenic flight from Khorog over the Pamirs to Dushanbe — one of the world’s most spectacular domestic flights. Free afternoon in the capital.
Day 10: Departure
Transfer to Dushanbe Airport for departure.
