Day 1: Arrival in N’Djamena — Chad’s Capital

Arrive at N’Djamena International Airport. After visa formalities, transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation tour of Chad’s capital: the Grand Mosque, the vibrant central market, and the Avenue Charles de Gaulle. Visit the National Museum of Chad to learn about the country’s diverse ethnic groups — over 200 languages are spoken in Chad. Welcome dinner featuring Chadian cuisine at a local restaurant.

Day 2: N’Djamena to Guerewol Festival Grounds

Morning departure from N’Djamena, journeying into the Sahel region of central Chad where the Wodaabe (Mbororo) people gather for their annual Guerewol festival. The drive passes through traditional villages and savanna landscapes. Arrive at the festival grounds by late afternoon — a temporary settlement of Wodaabe encampments. First evening of the festival: the Wodaabe men prepare for tomorrow’s dance, applying elaborate face paint — ochre, white clay, and black kohl — in intricate patterns that emphasize their features: white teeth, bright eyes, and high cheekbones.

Day 3: Guerewol Festival — The Yaake Dance

The Guerewol festival’s main event: the Yaake courtship dance competition. Wodaabe men line up in tight formation, their faces painted with geometric patterns, wearing elaborate embroidered tunics and ostrich-feather headdresses. Moving as one, they perform the Yaake — rolling their eyes to show the whites, baring their teeth in wide smiles, and dancing for hours on end in the desert heat. Three female judges, chosen for their beauty and wisdom, select the most beautiful male dancers. The winners may be courted by unmarried women, and the festival often results in new relationships and marriages. Day 4: Guerewol Festival — Gerewol Dance & Wodaabe Culture

Second day of the festival: the Gerewol dance, often performed at night by firelight, creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Spend the day immersed in Wodaabe culture — learn about their nomadic cattle-herding lifestyle, their elaborate beauty traditions, and their social structure. Visit Wodaabe family encampments to see daily life: women’s intricate hairstyles, leather work, and the preparation of traditional foods. The Wodaabe are known as the “most beautiful people in Africa,” and their dedication to physical beauty and elaborate adornment is unmatched.

Day 5: Return to N’Djamena — Gaoui Village

Morning farewell to the Wodaabe encampments. Journey back towards N’Djamena, stopping at Gaoui village, the traditional capital of the Sao civilization. Explore the distinctive conical mud-brick architecture of the Sao people, visit a traditional pottery workshop, and see the painted murals decorating village houses. Lunch in Gaoui. Arrive in N’Djamena by late afternoon for rest and reflection on the extraordinary cultural experience of the Guerewol.

Day 6: N’Djamena — Lake Chad Excursion

Day trip to the shores of Lake Chad, once one of Africa’s largest lakes and a vital water source for millions. Visit traditional fishing villages along the lake’s shores. The lake’s water levels fluctuate dramatically — what was open water a generation ago may now be farmland. Meet local fishermen and farmers, learning about their relationship with this changing ecosystem. Optional boat ride on the lake (seasonal, water levels permitting). Evening return to N’Djamena for a farewell dinner.

Day 7: N’Djamena — Departure

Morning visit to the artisan market for last-minute purchases: Wodaabe-inspired jewelry, Sao pottery, Chadian textiles, and leather work. Transfer to N’Djamena International Airport for departure. Take home photographs and memories of the Wodaabe Guerewol — one of the most visually spectacular and culturally significant festivals in Africa.
