Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Ushuaia — El Fin del Mundo

Fly to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world (54°48’S). The city sits on the Beagle Channel, with the Martial Mountains rising directly behind — snow-capped even in summer. Ushuaia began as a penal colony in 1896; prisoners built the railway and much of the original town, living in what was considered the most remote prison on Earth. Today it’s the gateway to Antarctica. Check into your hotel and walk the waterfront. Evening: king crab (centolla) dinner at a restaurant on the port, watching the Beagle Channel’s waters darken over the mountains of Tierra del Fuego. Overnight in Ushuaia.

Day 2: Tierra del Fuego National Park

Full day in Tierra del Fuego National Park (63,000 hectares at the very tip of South America). Hike the Senda Costera (Coastal Trail, 8km) along the Beagle Channel through forests of lenga, ñire, and canelo trees. The trail passes the remains of Yámana shell middens — 6,000-year-old evidence of the indigenous people who lived here wearing only grease and occasional fur cloaks, astonishing early European explorers. Visit Lapataia Bay, the literal end of the Pan-American Highway (Ruta 3) — 17,848km from Alaska, the end of the road for the American continents. Opt for the End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo), the old prison railway turned tourist attraction through the Pipo River valley. Afternoon: canoeing on Lapataia Bay. Evening: optional hike to Martial Glacier for sunset views over Ushuaia and the channel. Overnight in Ushuaia.

Day 3: Beagle Channel Navigation & Isla de los Lobos

Morning boat trip on the Beagle Channel, named after HMS Beagle, which surveyed these waters with the young Charles Darwin aboard in 1833. Navigate to the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse — the iconic red-and-white striped lighthouse on a lonely rock, often wrongly called “the lighthouse at the end of the world” (that’s the San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse on Isla de los Estados, inspiration for Jules Verne’s novel). Continue to Isla de los Lobos (Sea Lion Island) and Isla de los Pájaros (Bird Island), where South American sea lions, imperial cormorants, and rock cormorants crowd the rocky shores. The boat approaches close enough to hear the cacophony and smell the guano. Afternoon: visit the Museo Marítimo y del Presidio, housed in the original prison — the cells now contain exhibits on the Yámana people, the prison’s history, and Antarctic exploration. Overnight in Ushuaia.

Day 4: Lakes Region — Escondido & Fagnano

Drive north (the only direction, unless you have a boat to Antarctica) along Ruta 3 through the Fuegian Andes. Stop at viewpoints over Lago Escondido (Hidden Lake) and Lago Fagnano, a 100km-long tectonic lake that forms the natural boundary between Argentina and Chile. Continue to the Garibaldi Pass (450m), the highest point on Ruta 3, with views of both lakes and the Darwin Range. Afternoon: hike to the Vinciguerra Glacier or ride a husky sled (winter/spring) in the valley. Stop at a traditional estancia for an asado (Patagonian barbecue) — lamb slow-cooked over an open fire for hours. Overnight in Ushuaia.

Day 5: Cape Horn Cruise — Day 1

Board a small expedition vessel (Australis or similar) for a 4-day mini-cruise through the most southerly waters on Earth. Sail east on the Beagle Channel. Afternoon: zodiac landing at Wulaia Bay on Isla Navarino, once the largest Yámana settlement in the region — Darwin landed here in 1833 and described the encounter. Hike through Magellanic forest to a panoramic viewpoint. Evening: the ship enters the Murray Channel and approaches Cape Horn. Overnight: expedition vessel.

Day 6: Cape Horn — The Sailor’s Everest

Dawn at Cape Horn (55°59’S, 67°16’W), the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. This is the legendary Cape Horn — where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans collide, where waves can exceed 30m, where winds average 30 knots and storms occur 200 days per year, and where an estimated 10,000 sailors have died since its discovery in 1616. Weather permitting (roughly 70% success rate in summer), zodiac ashore at the Chilean naval station. Climb the 160 wooden steps to the Cape Horn Monument — an albatross-shaped steel sculpture silhouetted against the sky, dedicated to all mariners lost rounding the Horn. The view from here is simply the endless Southern Ocean — the next land south is Antarctica, 1,000km away. Stamp your passport at the station. This is one of the world’s most exclusive landings — fewer people visit Cape Horn in a year than summit Kilimanjaro in a day. Overnight: expedition vessel.

Day 7: Glacier Alley & Punta Arenas

Morning: sail through “Glacier Alley” in the Northwest Arm of the Beagle Channel — five massive glaciers (España, Romanche, Alemania, Francia, Italia) cascade from the Darwin Range directly into the sea. The ship approaches close to active calving fronts of these tidewater glaciers. Disembark at Punta Arenas in the afternoon. Visit the Nao Victoria Museum (full-size replicas of Magellan’s ship and the HMS Beagle). Evening: farewell dinner at the historic Club de la Unión. Overnight in Punta Arenas.

Day 8: Punta Arenas & Fly North

Morning at the Salesian Museum with its collection of Patagonian indigenous artifacts and natural history. Visit the Strait of Magellan waterfront and the Magellan Monument — rub the bronze foot of the Patagonian native statue for luck (tradition says it guarantees your return to Patagonia). Transfer to Punta Arenas airport.
