Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Baku
Welcome to Azerbaijan! Transfer from Heydar Aliyev International Airport. Evening walk along Baku Boulevard — the Caspian Sea promenade with its futuristic architecture. Welcome dinner featuring Azerbaijani plov (saffron rice with lamb and dried fruits). Overnight in Baku.
Day 2: Baku Old City & Modern Marvels
Full day in Baku. Morning: the Inner City (Icherisheher), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the Maiden Tower (12th century), the Palace of the Shirvanshahs (15th century), and the Caravanserais where Silk Road merchants once stayed. Afternoon: Baku’s modern architecture — the Heydar Aliyev Center (Zaha Hadid’s flowing masterpiece), the Flame Towers, and the Carpet Museum shaped like a rolled carpet. Evening: Azerbaijani tea culture experience at a traditional caykhana. Overnight in Baku.
Day 3: Gobustan & Absheron — Land of Fire
Morning drive to Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO site with over 6,000 petroglyphs dating back 40,000 years. Walk among the rock carvings depicting hunting scenes, dances, and ancient ships — proof that the Caspian was much higher in prehistoric times. See the Gaval Dash (tambourine stone) that produces musical notes when struck. Afternoon: Absheron Peninsula’s fire tourism — visit Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain), a natural gas fire that has been burning continuously for centuries, and the Ateshgah Fire Temple, a Zoroastrian-Hindu pilgrimage site with a natural eternal flame. Overnight in Baku.
Day 4: Caucasus Mountains — Quba & Khinalig
Drive north into the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Visit Quba, known for its apple orchards and traditional rug weaving. Marvel at the Qechresh Forest with its rainbow-colored autumn leaves. Continue by 4×4 to Khinalig (2,350m), one of the highest and most ancient villages in the Caucasus — inhabited continuously for over 5,000 years. The Khinalig people speak their own unique language isolate with no known relatives. Lunch with a Khinalig family. Panoramic views of Mount Bazarduzu (4,466m), Azerbaijan’s highest peak. Overnight in Quba.
Day 5: Shamakhi & Lahij
Drive to Shamakhi, the ancient capital of the Shirvan kingdom and a major Silk Road city. Visit the Juma Mosque (8th century, Azerbaijan’s oldest) and the Diri Baba Mausoleum carved into a cliff. Continue to Lahij, a 5th-century mountaintop village famous for its coppersmiths — the clanging of hammers on copper has echoed here for 1,500 years. Watch master artisans at work and purchase hand-engraved copper plates. Overnight near Ismayilli.
Day 6: Sheki — Silk Road Jewel
Arrive in Sheki, the most beautiful town in Azerbaijan. Visit the Sheki Khan’s Palace (1762) — a Persian miniature come to life, with stained glass windows (shebeke) assembled without a single nail and murals covering every surface. Explore the Sheki Caravanserai, a perfectly preserved Silk Road inn where merchants once rested their camels. Visit the Albanian Church in Kish village (1st century) — one of the oldest Christian sites in the Caucasus. Evening: Sheki halva and tea at a garden restaurant. Overnight in Sheki.
Day 7: Ilisu & Gakh — Georgian Borderlands
Explore the villages along the Georgia-Azerbaijan border. Visit Ilisu, a mountain village with a ruined medieval fortress and a 17th-century mosque. Hike to the Ilisu Waterfall. Visit Gakh, known for its ancient Albanian church and the dramatic mountain scenery where the Caucasus meet subtropical forests. Afternoon visit to the Ajinohur steppe — a vast grassland landscape that feels more Central Asian than Caucasian. Overnight in Sheki.
Day 8: Return to Baku via Wine Country
Drive back to Baku through Azerbaijan’s nascent wine country in the Ismayilli region — Azerbaijan was one of the world’s major wine producers during Soviet times. Visit a modern winery for Azerbaijani wine tasting (pomegranate wine is a local specialty). Afternoon at the Gobustan mud volcanoes — Azerbaijan has the most mud volcanoes of any country on Earth. These alien landscapes of bubbling grey mud resemble the surface of Mars. Farewell dinner at a Baku rooftop restaurant with Flame Towers views. Overnight in Baku.
Day 9: Depart Baku
Morning visit to Baku’s Taza Bazaar — a sensory explosion of spices, dried fruits, black caviar, and Azerbaijani tea. Transfer to the airport. Sag ol — thank you, Azerbaijan!
