Liechtenstein, the world’s sixth-smallest country (160 km²), is 100% Alpine — and packs more hiking trails per square kilometer than any of its European neighbors. This 5-day self-guided walking holiday follows the newly created Liechtenstein Trail (Liechtenstein-Weg), a 75 km route that traverses the entire country from south to north, connecting all 11 municipalities through Alpine pastures, medieval castles, and Rhine Valley panoramas. Hike by day, sleep in comfortable hotels by night, with your luggage transferred ahead.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Balzers to Triesenberg — Gutenberg Castle
Arrive in Liechtenstein (via Zurich or Innsbruck). Transfer to Balzers, the southern gateway to the country. Visit Gutenberg Castle, a beautifully preserved 12th-century fortress perched on a hill above the village — still privately owned, with the chapel and rose garden open to visitors. Begin your hike north along the Liechtenstein Trail, ascending through vineyards and meadows into the Alpine foothills. Reach Triesenberg (884m), a charming Walser village settled by migrants from the Swiss Valais in the 13th century. The distinctive Walser dialect and architecture still survive here. Panoramic views over the entire Rhine Valley, with the Swiss Alps on one side and the Austrian Alps on the other. Overnight in Triesenberg.

Day 2: Triesenberg to Vaduz via the Alpine Ridge
Today’s hike follows the high trail along the Alpine ridge, offering spectacular views on both sides — the Rhine Valley below and the peaks of the Rätikon range above. Pass through Malbun, Liechtenstein’s only ski resort, nestled in a high Alpine valley at 1,600 meters. Alpine meadows alive with wildflowers in summer (gentian, alpine rose, edelweiss). Stop for lunch at a mountain hut serving käsknöpfle (Liechtenstein’s version of cheese spaetzle) and local beer. Descend through forest to Vaduz, the tiny capital with just 5,700 residents. Visit the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Liechtenstein Art Museum), a striking black basalt cube housing one of Europe’s finest collections of modern and contemporary art. Overnight in Vaduz.

Day 3: Vaduz Castle & Prince’s Wine Cellars
Morning walk up to Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz), the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein (Hans-Adam II) since 1938. While the castle interior is not open to the public, the views of the Rhine Valley from the castle path are magnificent. Continue to the Prince of Liechtenstein Winery (Hofkellerei des Fürsten von Liechtenstein), where the princely family produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from their own vineyards. Enjoy a guided tasting of the princely cuvées — some of Europe’s most exclusive wines, never exported, only available in Liechtenstein. Afternoon hike through the vineyards and along the Rhine River. Overnight in Vaduz.

Day 4: Vaduz to Schellenberg via the Eschnerberg Trail
Cross the Rhine and hike the Eschnerberg Trail, a prehistoric ridge path with archaeological sites dating to the Neolithic (5,000 BCE). The trail passes through the Ruggeller Riet nature reserve, a wetland of international importance (Ramsar site) that’s a crucial stopover for migratory birds. Continue to Schellenberg, Liechtenstein’s northernmost municipality, with two ruined medieval castles (Obere Burg and Untere Burg) and a Russian monument commemorating the 1805 escape of the Russian army under General Suvorov across the Alps. Farewell dinner at a traditional Gasthaus, toasting with a glass of Liechtenstein wine. Overnight in Schellenberg or Feldkirch (just across the border in Austria).

Day 5: Departure via Zurich
After breakfast, transfer to Zurich Airport (1.5 hours) or continue your journey into neighboring Switzerland or Austria. Depart with the unique satisfaction of having hiked an entire country — something possible in few places on Earth.
