Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Vilanculos
Welcome to Mozambique! Fly into Vilanculos Airport (served by direct flights from Johannesburg). Transfer to your beachfront lodge overlooking the turquoise waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Afternoon at leisure on the white sand beach — swim, read, or simply soak in the Indian Ocean beauty. Welcome dinner of peri-peri prawns — Mozambique’s signature dish. Overnight at Vilanculos.
Day 2: Bazaruto Island Day Trip
Full day boat excursion to Bazaruto Island, the largest island in the archipelago. The sand dunes of Bazaruto rise dramatically from the sea — climb to the top for panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the mainland. Walk the pristine beaches, snorkel in the crystal-clear waters at Two-Mile Reef — one of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Spot dolphins playing in the bow wave. Beach barbecue lunch. Overnight in Vilanculos.
Day 3: Dhow Safari & Snorkeling
Set sail on a traditional Mozambican dhow — the wooden sailing boats that have plied these waters for centuries. Sail between the islands of the archipelago: Benguerra, Magaruque, and Santa Carolina (Paradise Island). Snorkel in the marine national park — green turtles, manta rays, whale sharks (seasonal, May-Oct), and the rare dugong. Fresh seafood barbecue on a deserted sandbar. Overnight in Vilanculos.
Day 4: Horse Safari & Island Exploration
Morning horse ride along the Vilanculos beach — Mozambique is famous for its beach horse safaris, and the shallow warm waters of the bay allow you to ride your horse into the sea. Afternoon at leisure: kayak through the mangroves, visit the Vilanculos craft market, or take a local cooking class. Sunset dhow cruise. Overnight in Vilanculos.
Day 5: Benguerra Island Retreat
Transfer by speedboat to Benguerra Island for two nights at a luxury eco-lodge. Benguerra is the jewel of the archipelago — pristine beaches, freshwater lakes, and traditional fishing villages. Afternoon snorkeling or diving at the protected reefs. Sundowners at the lodge’s beach bar. Overnight at Benguerra Island.
Day 6: Benguerra Island — Marine Safari & Community Visit
Morning marine safari — search for dolphins, turtles, and the elusive dugong. In season (Jun-Nov), humpback whales migrate through these waters. Afternoon visit to a local fishing community — learn traditional fishing techniques, coconut weaving, and the rhythm of island life. Farewell dinner under the stars with fresh-caught seafood. Overnight at Benguerra.
Day 7: Depart Vilanculos
Morning swim and snorkel. Speedboat transfer back to Vilanculos and onwards to the airport. Adeus — goodbye, Mozambique!
