Andorra: 5-Day Pyrenees Hiking & Hot Springs Adventure
Nestled in the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain, the Principality of Andorra is Europe’s highest capital country — and one of its best-kept hiking secrets. Spanning just 468 km², this tiny nation packs in 65 mountain peaks over 2,500 meters, Romanesque churches dating to the 9th century, and the largest thermal spa complex in southern Europe. Unlike the crowds of the Alps, Andorra’s trails remain refreshingly quiet. This 5-day adventure combines high-altitude hiking through UNESCO-listed valleys with the unique cultural blend of Catalan, French, and Andorran influences.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Andorra la Vella
Arrive at Barcelona or Toulouse airport. Private transfer 3 hours into the Pyrenees to Andorra la Vella, Europe’s highest capital city at 1,023 meters. Settle into your hotel and take an orientation walk through the historic center — visit the Casa de la Vall (1580), one of Europe’s oldest parliaments, and the 12th-century Santa Coloma Church with its distinctive Lombard Romanesque bell tower. Welcome dinner featuring trinxat (Catalan potato-cabbage cake with bacon) and Andorran wine. Overnight in Andorra la Vella.
Day 2: Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror — UNESCO World Heritage
Full-day hike in the Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror, a UNESCO World Heritage glacial valley spanning 4,247 hectares — over 9% of Andorra’s total territory. This pristine valley has been shaped by pastoral activity for over 700 years, with traditional stone shepherd huts (bordes) still dotting the landscape. The hike climbs through pine and birch forests to alpine meadows at 2,500 meters, with views of glacial lakes and the 2,906-meter summit of Pic de la Portelleta. Keep watch for Pyrenean chamois (isard) and golden eagles. Packed lunch at a mountain refuge. Return to Andorra la Vella for dinner. Overnight.
Day 3: Ordino — Iron Route & Sorteny Nature Reserve
Drive to the picturesque village of Ordino in the northern Valira del Nord valley. Visit the Areny-Plandolit House Museum, a noble family residence with original 17th-19th century furnishings. Morning hike in the Sorteny Valley Nature Reserve, a botanical paradise with over 800 species of flora including the endemic Andorran bellflower and edelweiss. The valley holds the Pyrenees’ largest concentration of wild orchids. Afternoon visit to Llorts to walk part of the Iron Route (Ruta del Ferro), following the old mining trail past forges and charcoal kilns that tell the story of Andorra’s pre-tourism economy. Overnight in Ordino.
Day 4: Tristaina Lakes & Caldea Spa
Morning hike to the Tristaina Lakes (Estanys de Tristaina), a trio of glacial lakes at 2,300 meters forming a natural amphitheater beneath the peaks at the French border. The 4-5 hour circuit offers spectacular Pyrenean panoramas, with the option to summit Pic de Tristaina (2,878m) for views into France and Spain simultaneously. After the hike, descend to Escaldes-Engordany for a well-earned afternoon at Caldea, Europe’s largest mountain thermal spa. Soak in indoor and outdoor thermal pools fed by natural hot springs (34°C), with mountain views. The spa’s iconic 80-meter glass spire is an Andorran landmark. Farewell dinner in Andorra la Vella.
Day 5: Departure via Barcelona or Toulouse
After breakfast, transfer to Barcelona or Toulouse airport (3-3.5 hours). Optional stop at a duty-free shopping center — Andorra’s tax-free status makes it a shopping destination for perfumes, electronics, and outdoor gear. Departure.
