Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Lilongwe — Transfer to Lake Malawi
Welcome to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa! Airport pickup in Lilongwe. Drive through the scenic Central African Plateau to Lake Malawi. Arrive at your beach lodge on the golden sands of Senga Bay. The lake stretches to the horizon like an inland sea — it’s the ninth largest lake in the world. Welcome dinner with fresh chambo (tilapia) from the lake. Overnight at Lake Malawi.
Day 2: Senga Bay — Kayaking & Snorkeling
Morning kayaking along the rocky shoreline, exploring hidden coves. Lake Malawi contains more fish species than any other lake on Earth — over 1,000 species of colorful cichlids. Snorkel in the crystal-clear freshwater aquarium that is Lake Malawi — it’s like diving in a giant tropical fish tank. Afternoon at leisure on the beach. Overnight at Lake Malawi.
Day 3: Lake Malawi National Park (UNESCO)
Boat trip to Lake Malawi National Park at Cape Maclear (UNESCO World Heritage). This protected area preserves an extraordinary example of biological evolution — the cichlid fish here are to evolutionary biology what Darwin’s finches are to the Galapagos. Full day of snorkeling, swimming, and beach relaxation. Visit Otter Point for the best snorkeling. Optional: learn to scuba dive (PADI courses available). Overnight at Cape Maclear.
Day 4: Cape Maclear — Island Hopping
Full day island-hopping by traditional wooden boat. Visit uninhabited islands with white sand beaches. Snorkel at Thumbi Island West, where fish density is incredible. Beach BBQ lunch. Sunset sail back to Cape Maclear. Overnight at Cape Maclear.
Day 5: Likoma Island — Cathedral in the Lake
Fly or ferry to Likoma Island, a tiny speck in the middle of Lake Malawi, closer to Mozambique than Malawi. Visit the extraordinary St. Peter’s Cathedral — a massive Anglican cathedral the size of Winchester Cathedral, built on a tropical island in 1903. A completely surreal and magnificent sight. Explore the island by bicycle. Overnight on Likoma Island.
Day 6: Likoma — Beach & Village Life
Morning at the pristine beaches of Likoma — some of the finest white sand on Lake Malawi. Walk through the island’s fishing villages to experience authentic Malawian life. Visit the local market. Afternoon snorkeling at rocky points around the island. Sunset drinks at a beach bar. Overnight on Likoma Island.
Day 7: Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve
Return to the mainland. Visit Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Malawi’s oldest and largest park. Game drive to see elephants (500 were translocated here in one of Africa’s biggest elephant moves), buffalo, antelope, and over 280 bird species. Evening walking safari. Farewell dinner. Overnight at safari camp.
Day 8: Return to Lilongwe — Depart
Drive back to Lilongwe. Visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre. Airport transfer. Tsalani bwino!
