Day 1: Arrive Praia, Santiago — Africa’s Island Nation

Day 2: Cidade Velha — Africa’s First European Colonial City

Morning: visit Cidade Velha (UNESCO World Heritage), just 15km from Praia. This was the first European colonial settlement in the tropics (founded 1462) and a crucial hub of the transatlantic slave trade for 300 years. Walk the cobblestone Rua Banana — Africa’s oldest street, lined with traditional stone houses. Visit the Royal Fortress of Sao Filipe (1590), built to defend against pirates including Sir Francis Drake, with panoramic views of the valley. The Se Catedral, begun in 1693, stands in ruins — abandoned when pirate attacks forced the capital to move to Praia. Day 3: Assomada & Tarrafal — Santiago’s Wild Interior

Day 4: Fly to Fogo — The Volcano Island

Day 5: Cha das Caldeiras — Inside the Volcano

Unforgettable day. Drive up into the Cha das Caldeiras, the crater floor at 1,700m. The 2014 eruption buried villages under lava, and the new village has been rebuilt beside the old one — houses that were completely engulfed now have only chimneys and roof peaks visible above the solidified lava. The landscape is raw, primal, and astonishingly beautiful. Meet local residents who chose to return and rebuild despite the risk. Hike through the lava fields and vineyards growing in black volcanic ash. Optional: summit attempt on Pico do Fogo (approximately 6 hours round trip from the caldera, requires good fitness and an early start) — the views from Africa’s most dramatic island volcano encompass the entire archipelago on clear days. Overnight in Cha das Caldeiras at a guesthouse (simple but unforgettable).

Day 6: Fly to Sao Vicente — The Cultural Capital

Morning flight from Sao Filipe to Mindelo on Sao Vicente Island (via Praia). Mindelo is Cape Verde’s cultural capital — the birthplace of Cesaria Evora, the “Barefoot Diva” who brought morna (Cape Verde’s soulful, melancholic music) to the world. Afternoon: explore the city’s colorful colonial streets, the Municipal Market (a 1920s Art Deco building), and the Cesaria Evora Museum. This deep valley, carved by ancient volcanic activity, is a riot of tropical vegetation — sugar cane, bananas, papaya, mango, and coffee grow on impossibly steep terraces. Walk the levada trails (irrigation channels) through the valley, passing farmers working their plots with techniques unchanged for centuries. Day 10: Monte Verde & Baia das Gatas

Morning: drive up Monte Verde (750m), Sao Vicente’s highest point, for 360-degree views of the entire island and across to Santo Antao and Santa Luzia. The drive passes through a landscape that transitions from arid coastal plains to green mountain microclimates. Afternoon: relax at Baia das Gatas, a natural bay with calm, crystal-clear water and a crescent of golden sand — one of Cape Verde’s best swimming beaches. Optional snorkeling in the bay. Evening: last chance for live music in Mindelo’s bars. Overnight in Mindelo.

Day 11: Departure

Morning at leisure in Mindelo for last-minute shopping at the Municipal Market — consider bringing home a bottle of Fogo wine, a CD of morna music, or Cape Verdean coffee from Santo Antao’s volcanic slopes. Transfer to Cesaria Evora Airport for departure. You leave having island-hopped across one of the Atlantic’s most captivating archipelagos — where Africa meets Portugal, where volcanoes create wine, and where the music is as soulful as the landscape is dramatic.
