Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Bujumbura
Welcome to Burundi. Lakefront walk and welcome dinner. Overnight at King’s Conference Hotel.
Day 2: Bujumbura City & Rusizi National Park
City tour: Central Market, Explorers Memorial, Independence Monument. Afternoon boat safari on Rusizi River — hippos, crocodiles, and spectacular birdlife. Sunset dhow cruise on Lake Tanganyika. Overnight in Bujumbura.
Day 3: Gishora Drums & Gitega Royal Capital
Sacred drum performance at Gishora — the UNESCO-recognized Batimbo drummers in full ceremony. Gitega National Museum with royal artifacts. Visit a traditional palm oil processing facility where oil is extracted by foot-press methods unchanged for centuries. Overnight in Gitega.
Day 4: Karera Falls & Rutana Highlands
Five-tiered Karera Falls plunging through volcanic gorges. Afternoon hike in the Rutana highlands, one of Burundi’s most scenic regions of terraced hillsides and tea plantations. Visit a tea factory for a tasting of Burundi’s prized high-altitude tea. Overnight in Gitega.
Day 5: Mugara Hot Springs & Rumonge Coast
Morning soak at Mugara hot springs on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Continue to Rumonge, a historic fishing town where the lake’s famous Tanganyika sardines (ndagala) are dried on vast racks along the shore. Visit a fishing community to learn traditional net-making and see the evening fishing fleet prepare to launch. Overnight at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort.
Day 6: Kibira National Park — Mountain Rainforest
Drive into Kibira National Park, a 400 km² mountain rainforest in the Congo-Nile watershed. The park is home to chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and over 200 bird species. Guided forest walk on the tea plantation boundary trail (the park interior is restricted). The altitude (up to 2,660m) provides cool relief from the lakeside heat. Visit thermal springs at the park boundary. Farewell dinner on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Overnight at Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort.
Day 7: Bujumbura & Depart
Morning at leisure on the lake. Transfer to Bujumbura airport.
