Day 2: Flight to the Edge of the Sahara

Morning at leisure in Bamako. Visit the National Museum of Mali — one of West Africa’s finest ethnographic collections, with masks, textiles, and archaeological finds spanning Mali’s great empires (Ghana, Mali, Songhai). Afternoon: transfer to the airport for your Sky Mali flight bound for the desert. The approach to Timbuktu — a city appearing from the sands like a mirage — is unforgettable. Day 3: Timbuktu UNESCO Heritage — Mosques & Manuscripts

With security detail, visit the Djingareyber Mosque, built in 1325 by Mansa Musa (the richest man in history) on his return from Mecca. Day 4: Resurrection of History & Tuareg Traditions

Morning: visit the Mausoleums of Timbuktu, painstakingly rebuilt with UNESCO’s support after the 2012 conflict. These are the tombs of the 333 saints who, according to legend, protect the city. Walk in the footsteps of 19th-century European explorers — visit the preserved homes of Heinrich Barth (the first European to reach Timbuktu and return alive, 1853), Alexander Gordon Laing (who arrived in 1826 but was murdered before leaving), and Rene Caillie (the Frenchman who disguised himself as a Muslim to reach Timbuktu and returned to claim the prize). Afternoon: if conditions permit, travel to a Tuareg camp under the vast desert sky. The Tuareg, the “Blue People of the Sahara” (named for the indigo dye that stains their skin), share mint tea — three cups, each sweeter than the last — and stories of desert life. Day 5: Return to Bamako — Departure
