Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in South Luangwa
Fly into Lusaka (LUN) and connect to Mfuwe Airport (approximately 1 hour flight). Your guide meets you for the 45-minute transfer through local villages and mopane woodland to your bush camp on the Luangwa River. Welcome briefing and orientation — meet your walking guide and armed scout, receive a safety briefing on walking in big game territory. Settle into your tented accommodation and enjoy your first African sunset over the Luangwa River, watching elephants drink at the water’s edge. Dinner under the stars.

Day 2: Morning Walk & Afternoon Game Drive
Rise before dawn for a light breakfast, then set out on your first walking safari (3-4 hours) as the bush awakens. Your armed scout leads, your naturalist guide interprets the story of the sand — leopard tracks crossing elephant spoor, the alarm call of impala suggesting a predator nearby, the fresh diggings of an aardvark from the night before. Learn to identify lion roars, read giraffe browsing height, and understand the complex language of the African bush. Walk along the Luangwa River through riverine forest, approaching wildlife on foot at a safe distance. After a bush brunch, return to camp for siesta during the heat of the day. Late afternoon game drive exploring further into the park, followed by a night drive with spotlight — the best chance to see leopards hunting, genets, civets, and perhaps a porcupine or aardvark.

Day 3: The River Route — Walking Safari
Today’s walk follows the Luangwa River, where wildlife concentrates during the dry season. The riverine forest — dense thickets of ebony, mahogany, and sausage trees — provides cover for leopards and shade for elephants. Cross open floodplains where puku and impala graze, alert for predators. Your guide points out medicinal plants used by local communities, explains termite mound ecology, and identifies birds — from tiny malachite kingfishers to massive crowned cranes. Afternoon at leisure in camp. Optional visit to a local village or community school supported by conservation tourism. Evening game drive and night drive.

Day 4: Full-Day Walking Safari & Sundowner
The ultimate walking day. After an early breakfast, set out on an extended walking safari (5-6 hours) with a packed bush lunch. Your scout and guide take you deeper into the park than most visitors venture. Walk through varied habitats — open plains, mopane woodland, and riverine thickets — each supporting different wildlife. The thrill of encountering elephants on foot, observing their behavior from a safe distance with the wind in your favor, is an experience that stays with you forever. After a siesta at camp, depart for a final evening game drive to a scenic sundowner spot — gin and tonics overlooking the Luangwa River at sunset, with hippos grunting below and the sky turning gold, orange, and purple. Farewell dinner at camp.

Day 5: Departure
Final morning breakfast in camp. Depending on flight time, a short nature walk near camp. Transfer to Mfuwe Airport for your flight to Lusaka and onward connection. Depart with the unforgettable experience of walking among Africa’s great wildlife.
