Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Wallis — Welcome to Uvea
Arrive at Hihifo Airport on Wallis Island (Uvea). Your guide greets you with the traditional Wallisian welcome. Transfer to Mata-Utu, one of the world’s smallest capitals — essentially a village with a cathedral, a royal palace, and a few shops. Visit the stunning Mata-Utu Cathedral (completed 1951, rebuilt after a cyclone), a brilliant white church with blue trim that dominates the waterfront. Learn about Wallis & Futuna’s unique political system: three traditional kingdoms (Uvea on Wallis, Alo and Sigave on Futuna) coexist with French administration. Evening: Wallisian feast featuring seafood, taro, breadfruit, and coconut. Overnight in Mata-Utu.
Day 2: Lalolalo Lake & Talietumu Fortress
Morning visit to Lake Lalolalo, a perfectly circular volcanic crater lake ringed by jungle. The lake is one of the Pacific’s most dramatic natural wonders — sheer cliff walls plunge 30 meters to impossibly blue water. Dense vegetation clings to the walls, and the lake is home to endemic eels. Next: Talietumu, the “Fortress of the Dead,” built around 1450 AD during the Tongan expansion period. These impressive stone ruins — defensive walls, platforms, and ceremonial terraces — are among the most significant archaeological sites in Western Polynesia. Afternoon: visit Pointe Matala’a for coastal views. Overnight Mata-Utu.
Day 3: Loma Nature Preserve & Marais Sanglants
Morning shopping for picnic supplies. Drive to Loma Nature Preserve, a pristine coastal protected area. The highlight is Marais Sanglants (Bloody Marshes) — a tidal pool shaped like a natural infinity pool overlooking the Pacific, fringed by white sand. Swim, snorkel, and picnic in this paradise. Afternoon: boat tour circumnavigating Wallis Island, viewing the coastline, sea caves, and offshore islets. Spot for turtles, dolphins, and seabirds. Overnight Mata-Utu.
Day 4: Ferry to Futuna — The Wild Island
Morning ferry crossing to Futuna Island (3-5 hours depending on conditions). Futuna is dramatically different from Wallis — mountainous, rugged, and with far fewer visitors. Visit Poi village and the magnificent Saint Pierre Chanel Church, a colorful jewel of a church honoring the first and only Catholic saint martyred in Oceania (1841). Drive to Belvédère de Mataki’uvea, a panoramic viewpoint over the ocean and the island’s volcanic peaks. Overnight in a Futuna guesthouse.
Day 5: Alofi — The Uninhabited Island
Cross by small boat to Alofi Island, an uninhabited island separated from Futuna by a narrow channel. Alofi is nature at its purest: no roads, no villages, just jungle, beaches, and birds. Hike through the tropical forest. Swim in Alofi’s pristine coves. Snorkel among untouched coral reefs. Picnic on a deserted beach. The island was once home to small communities but was largely abandoned after being raided in the 19th century. Afternoon return to Futuna, ferry back to Wallis. Farewell dinner with traditional Wallisian music and dance. Overnight Mata-Utu.
Day 6: Last Morning & Departure
Morning at leisure — visit the Mata-Utu market for local handicrafts: tapa cloth, coconut shell jewelry, and woven baskets. Transfer to Hihifo Airport.
