Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tongatapu

Arrive at Fua’amotu International Airport on Tongatapu, the main island of the Kingdom of Tonga. Warm Polynesian welcome with flower leis. Transfer to your beachfront accommodation in Nuku’alofa. Afternoon orientation and safety briefing for whale swimming. Evening walk along the Nuku’alofa waterfront. Overnight in Nuku’alofa.

Day 2: Tongatapu to Vava’u — Island Flight

Morning domestic flight to Vava’u, Tonga’s northern island group and one of the world’s premier whale swimming destinations. The 25-minute flight offers stunning views of the Ha’apai atolls. Arrive at Vava’u and check into your waterfront lodge. Afternoon boat orientation — familiarize yourself with the vessel and whale encounter protocols. Sunset from the Port of Refuge overlooking the protected harbor dotted with forested islands. Overnight in Vava’u.

Day 3: Whale Swim Day 1 — Gentle Giants

Early morning departure aboard a specially equipped whale-watching vessel. Skilled Tongan guides with 20+ years of experience lead the search for humpback whales that migrate to Tonga’s warm waters (July-October) to mate and give birth. With proper permits and training, you’ll enter the water in small groups of 4 to swim alongside these magnificent 15-meter gentle giants. Mother-calf pairs are a special highlight. Lunch on a deserted island beach. Return to lodge in the afternoon. Evening whale biology presentation. Overnight in Vava’u.

Day 4: Whale Swim Day 2 — Underwater Encounters

Second day of whale encounters. Each day brings unique experiences: a mother teaching her calf to breach, a male escort singing his haunting song that resonates through the water, or a curious juvenile approaching swimmers. Between whale swims, snorkel over vibrant coral gardens in the Vava’u archipelago. Picnic lunch on Mariner’s Cave or Swallows’ Cave. Overnight in Vava’u.

Day 5: Vava’u Island Exploration

A break from whale swimming to explore Vava’u’s lush interiors. Visit the ‘Ene’io Botanical Garden to learn about traditional Tongan plants and their medicinal uses. Afternoon hike to Mount Talau National Park for panoramic views of the Port of Refuge and its 50+ islands. Visit a local village to experience Tongan culture — tapa cloth making, traditional dance, and a Tongan feast (umu) cooked in an underground oven. Overnight in Vava’u.

Day 6: Whale Swim Day 3 — Final Encounters

Your third and final day of whale encounters. By now, you’ll have a deeper understanding of whale behavior and the profound experience of being in the water with Earth’s largest migratory mammals. Each encounter is unique and strictly regulated to minimize disturbance to the whales. Farewell dinner at a waterfront restaurant in Neiafu, Vava’u’s charming capital. Overnight in Vava’u.

Day 7: Vava’u to Tongatapu — Royal Heritage

Morning flight back to Tongatapu. Afternoon tour of Nuku’alofa and its surroundings: the Royal Palace, the Royal Tombs, and the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui Trilithon — Tonga’s Stonehenge, built around 1200 AD. Visit the Anahulu Cave with its stunning limestone formations and freshwater pool. Visit the Mapu’a ‘a Vaea Blowholes, where the ocean shoots through holes in the coral reef up to 30 meters high. Overnight in Nuku’alofa.

Day 8: Tongatapu Departure

Morning visit to the Talamahu Market for last-minute Tongan handicrafts — woven baskets, tapa cloth, and vanilla products. Transfer to Fua’amotu International Airport for departure. Carry home the memory of swimming alongside humpback whales in the crystal-clear waters of the Kingdom of Tonga.
