Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: La Paz to Uyuni — Altiplano Crossing
Depart La Paz on an overnight bus journey across the vast Bolivian Altiplano. The route passes through Oruro, a mining city famous for its spectacular Carnival. Watch the landscape transform from high-altitude plains dotted with grazing llamas to the salt-encrusted edge of the ancient lake that once covered this region. Arrive in Uyuni early morning.
Day 2: Uyuni — Train Cemetery & Colchani
Arrive in Uyuni early morning. Check into your hotel and rest briefly. Afternoon visit to the Train Cemetery on the outskirts of town — a surreal collection of abandoned steam locomotives from the early 20th century that once served the mining industry. Visit Colchani, where local families process salt from the Salar using traditional methods. Browse salt sculpture workshops and artisan co-ops. Evening briefing with your driver for the 3-day expedition ahead. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 3: Salar de Uyuni & Incahuasi Island
Full day exploring the Salar de Uyuni. Early morning departure to catch the sunrise over the salt flat — the pre-dawn light creates a magical atmosphere as the white salt glows under the rising sun. Walking tour on the hexagonal salt formations. Visit Incahuasi Island (Fish Island), crowned with giant cacti up to 12 meters tall growing on fossilized coral — evidence that this was once a prehistoric lake. Climb to the top for breathtaking 360-degree views. Enjoy creative perspective photography — the flat, white expanse makes for legendary forced-perspective photos. Sunset over the salt flat. Overnight in salt hotel — sleep on a bed of salt!
Day 4: High Desert Lagoons & Flamingos
Early departure south into the Siloli Desert. Stop at the Ollague Volcano viewpoint before entering Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve. Visit a succession of mineral-rich lagoons: Laguna Canapa, Laguna Hedionda, and Laguna Chiarkota — each hosting different flamingo species. Walk the surreal rock garden of the Arbol de Piedra. Arrive at Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon) by late afternoon to witness thousands of James’s flamingos feeding against the blood-red water. The deep crimson color comes from algae that thrive in the mineral-rich, shallow lake. Overnight at a basic mountain refuge.
Day 5: Geysers, Hot Springs & Return
Pre-dawn departure to witness the Sol de Manana Geyser Field at sunrise — walk among bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and sulfur vents in the thin air at 4,850 meters. Soak in the Polques Hot Springs with panoramic views of the surrounding volcanoes and desert. Visit Laguna Verde at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano. Return to Uyuni by evening for bus or flight connection to La Paz.
