Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Vágar — Gateway to the Faroes

Land at Vágar Airport, one of the world’s most scenic approaches — mountains rising from the sea, waterfalls cascading into fjords. Collect your rental car (Opel Corsa, unlimited mileage). First stop: the iconic Múlafossur Waterfall in the village of Gásadalur, a waterfall that plunges directly into the Atlantic with the dramatic islet of Tindhólmur in the background. Continue to the capital Tórshavn, one of the world’s smallest and most charming capitals. Overnight in Tórshavn.

Day 2: Streymoy — The Ancient Parliament & Saksun

Explore Tórshavn: the Tinganes peninsula, home to one of the world’s oldest parliaments dating to the Viking Age (c. 825 AD). The red wooden government buildings with turf roofs are among Scandinavia’s most photogenic sights. Drive to Saksun, a village in a natural amphitheater where a turquoise lagoon is framed by mountains. Visit the 19th-century church with its traditional turf roof. Afternoon: drive to the village of Tjørnuvík with its black sand beach and views of the sea stacks Risin and Kellingin (the Giant and the Witch). Overnight in Tórshavn.

Day 3: Eysturoy & Gjógv

Drive across Streymin Bridge to Eysturoy, the second-largest island. Visit Gjógv, one of the Faroes’ most beautiful villages, named after its 200-meter sea-filled gorge that serves as a natural harbor. Hike to the cliffs above Gjógv for views of the highest sea cliff in the world — Cape Enniberg (754m). Continue to the village of Eiði with views of the Risin og Kellingin sea stacks. Cross the new Eysturoy Tunnel, featuring the world’s first undersea roundabout with a light installation by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. Overnight in Klaksvík.

Day 4: Borðoy & Kalsoy — James Bond Country

Explore Klaksvík, the Faroes’ second-largest town and fishing capital. Visit Christianskirkja (Christian’s Church), a modern masterpiece completed in 1963. Ferry to Kalsoy Island to visit the Kallur Lighthouse at the island’s northern tip, featured in the James Bond film “No Time to Die” (2021). The hike to the lighthouse offers one of the most dramatic coastal views in the North Atlantic. Overnight in Klaksvík.

Day 5: Viðareiði & Northern Edge

Drive to the northernmost settlement, Viðareiði, on the island of Viðoy. This village sits beneath the shadow of Villingadalsfjall (841m). Visit the church with its remarkable silver communion set — a gift from the British government for Faroese sailors who rescued survivors of a shipwreck in 1847. Afternoon: return to Tórshavn via the scenic coastal route. Farewell dinner featuring Faroese specialties: fermented lamb (skerpikjøt), dried fish, and rhubarb dessert. Overnight in Tórshavn.

Day 6: Departure

Return rental car. Transfer to Vágar Airport. Fly over the islands you’ve just explored — a fitting farewell to one of Earth’s most dramatic landscapes.
