Itinerary Highlights

Day 1-2: Arrive Santiago — Praia & Cidade Velha

Arrive at Nelson Mandela International Airport on Santiago Island, the largest and most African of Cape Verde’s islands. Transfer to Praia, the capital city. Explore the historic plateau district with its Portuguese colonial architecture. Visit Cidade Velha (UNESCO World Heritage), the first European colonial settlement in the tropics, featuring the 15th-century Royal Fortress of São Filipe and the haunting pillory square where enslaved Africans were traded. Visit a traditional tabanka music performance.

Day 3-4: Fogo — The Volcano Island

Fly to Fogo Island, home to Pico do Fogo, Cape Verde’s highest peak at 2,829m — an active volcano that last erupted in 2014. The dramatic black lava landscape surrounds the village of Chã das Caldeiras inside the crater, where residents grow coffee and grapes in volcanic soil. Hike to the crater rim for sunrise views. Sample the unique Chã coffee and Fogo wine — both cultivated on the slopes of an active volcano.

Day 5-6: Sao Vicente — Cultural Heartbeat

Fly to São Vicente Island. Explore Mindelo, Cape Verde’s cultural capital — the birthplace of Cesária Évora, the “Barefoot Diva” who brought morna music to the world. Visit her house museum, the vibrant municipal market, and the fish market. Evening: live morna and coladeira music at a local bar. The island’s Carnival is legendary.

Day 7-9: Santo Antao — Hiker’s Paradise

Ferry to Santo Antão, the most dramatic island in the archipelago. The landscape is staggering: deep green valleys terraced with sugarcane and sweet potatoes, jagged volcanic peaks, and the vertiginous Cova crater — an extinct volcano now filled with agricultural fields. Hike the famous trail from Cova to Paul Valley, descending through microclimates from pine forest to tropical groves. Visit Ponta do Sol, the northernmost town, and the dramatic coastline of Cruzinha.

Day 10-11: Return to Santiago & Departure

Ferry back to São Vicente, fly to Santiago. Final day exploring Praia’s beachfront at Quebra Canela. Farewell dinner of fresh-caught tuna, grilled lobster, and grogue (Cape Verde’s sugarcane spirit). Departure from Praia.
