Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive St Thomas — Welcome to Paradise
Arrive at Cyril E. King Airport. Transfer to your beachfront resort. Afternoon orientation: drive to Mountain Top, the highest point on St Thomas at 1,500 feet, for panoramic views of Magens Bay and the British Virgin Islands on the horizon. Welcome banana daiquiri (invented here in the 1950s). Evening at leisure on Magens Bay, often ranked among the world’s top 10 beaches with its heart-shaped bay and calm waters. Overnight in St Thomas.
Day 2: St Thomas — Charlotte Amalie & Coral World
Morning: explore Charlotte Amalie, the historic capital named after a Danish queen. Walk the 99 Steps (actually 103), built by Danish settlers in the 1700s using ballast bricks from ships. Visit Fort Christian, the oldest standing structure in the Virgin Islands (1672), painted a striking red. Browse the duty-free shops — the USVI has one of the highest duty-free allowances in the Caribbean ($1,600 per person). Afternoon: Coral World Ocean Park for an underwater observatory and sea lion encounter. Overnight in St Thomas.
Day 3: St John Day Trip — Virgin Islands National Park
Ferry to St John, where two-thirds of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park. Begin at the Cruz Bay Visitor Center. Hike the Lind Point Trail for views over Cruz Bay and Honeymoon Beach. Afternoon: Trunk Bay, arguably the Caribbean’s most photographed beach, with its famous underwater snorkel trail — underwater signs identify coral and fish species. Visit the Annaberg Sugar Mill ruins, a 19th-century Danish plantation with spectacular views over Leinster Bay. Return ferry to St Thomas. Overnight in St Thomas.
Day 4: St Thomas Water Island & Charlotte Amalie Nightlife
Morning: boat to Water Island, the fourth and smallest of the main US Virgin Islands (population ~200). Relax at Honeymoon Beach, ring the famous Heidi’s Honeymoon Grill bell for lunch. Afternoon: kayak through the mangroves of the St Thomas Mangrove Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. Evening: explore Frenchtown, the historic fishing community with its colorful buildings and excellent seafood restaurants. Overnight in St Thomas.
Day 5: St Croix — Danish Heritage & Cruzan Rum
Seaplane flight to St Croix, the largest of the US Virgin Islands (45 minutes). Visit Christiansted, established in 1734, with its distinctive Danish colonial architecture painted in pastel yellows and pinks. Tour Fort Christiansvaern and the Scale House where sugar was weighed. Lunch at a waterfront restaurant on the Christiansted boardwalk. Afternoon: tour the Cruzan Rum Distillery, producing rum since 1760 — sample the world-famous Cruzan single barrel. Visit the St George Village Botanical Garden, built among the ruins of a 19th-century Danish sugar plantation. Overnight in Christiansted.
Day 6: St Croix — Buck Island & Salt River Bay
Morning: half-day sailing excursion to Buck Island Reef National Monument. The underwater trail at Buck Island was the first of its kind in the U.S. National Park system. Snorkel among elkhorn coral formations and hundreds of tropical fish species. Afternoon: visit Salt River Bay National Historical Park, the only site on U.S. territory where Christopher Columbus personally set foot in 1493. Kayak through the bioluminescent bay at dusk. Overnight in Christiansted.
