Day 1: Arrive Niue

Arrive at Hanan International Airport on Niue, one of the world’s smallest and most remote island nations — a raised coral atoll in the South Pacific, 2,400km northeast of New Zealand. Your rental car awaits (included) — Niue has one main road circling the entire island, impossible to get lost. Drive to your accommodation and settle in. Afternoon orientation: visit Alofi, one of the world’s smallest capitals, with its handful of government buildings, a few cafés, and the friendly Niuean people. Welcome swim at the Alofi Wharf — jump off the wharf into crystal-clear water where friendly sea snakes (non-venomous katuali) and spinner dolphins often visit. Welcome dinner at Kai Ika, Niue’s best seafood restaurant. Overnight at your accommodation.

Day 2: Limu Pools & Avaiki Cave — Coastline Wonders

Full-day exploration of Niue’s extraordinary limestone coastline. Morning: snorkel at Limu Pools, a series of natural crystal-clear rock pools teeming with tropical fish and corals, protected from the open ocean by the reef. The pools range from waist-deep to deep enough for diving. Continue to Matapa Chasm, a dramatic cleft in the cliffs leading to a deep, cool swimming channel flanked by towering limestone walls and overhung with lush vegetation — a natural swimming pool used by Niuean royalty for centuries. Afternoon: visit Avaiki Cave, where the first Polynesian settlers landed on Niue around 900 CE. At low tide, swim through a sea cave that opens onto a pristine pool with a sandy bottom. Day 3: Talava Arches & Whale Watching (Seasonal)

Morning trek through the coastal forest to Talava Arches, a spectacular natural limestone arch formation carved by thousands of years of wave action. Walk across the arch for vertigo-inducing views of the Pacific pounding the cliffs below. Afternoon: July-October, the waters around Niue become a nursery for humpback whales — and Niue is one of the few places on Earth where you can legally swim with whales. Join a responsible whale swim excursion: your guide will assess a whale’s behavior, and if a mother and calf are relaxed, you’ll slip into the water for an eye-to-eye encounter with these 15-meter, 30-tonne gentle giants. Off-season: alternative deep-sea fishing or reef snorkeling excursion. Overnight at accommodation.

Day 4: Togo Chasm & Anapala Chasm

Morning: hike to Togo Chasm, a hidden oasis accessed by a steep descent on a ladder through a narrow cleft in the limestone. At the bottom, a miniature palm-fringed beach with fine white sand, completely enclosed by towering rock walls — a secret garden straight out of a fantasy novel. Afternoon: visit Anapala Chasm near the village of Hakupu, another dramatic limestone cleft with a deep freshwater pool. The chasm’s walls are covered in endemic ferns and mosses, and the water is cold, clear, and wonderfully refreshing after the hike. Evening: visit the Niue night market for local crafts, vanilla products, and uga (coconut crab) — the world’s largest terrestrial arthropod. Overnight at accommodation.

Day 5: Scenic Drive & Hikulagi Sculpture Park

Full-day circumnavigation of the island on Niue’s ring road (64km). Stop at: the Hikulagi Sculpture Park, an outdoor gallery of contemporary Pacific art using recycled materials, built by local and international artists to protest global consumerism and climate change. Visit the tomb of Nukai Peniamina, the Niuean who brought Christianity to the island in 1846. Stop at the Liku sea track — a dramatic cliff-top walk to a blowhole that erupts with explosive force on windy days. Visit the Palaha Cave, another spectacular limestone cavern with a swimming hole. Evening BBQ on the beach. Overnight at accommodation.

Day 6: Snorkeling, Fishing & Farewell

Morning: snorkeling or diving on Niue’s pristine coral reefs. With visibility regularly exceeding 40 meters and no rivers dumping sediment into the sea, Niue offers some of the clearest water in the Pacific. Spot sea turtles, reef sharks, and swarms of colorful reef fish. Afternoon at leisure — visit the Niue market, browse local vanilla products (Niue produces some of the world’s finest organic vanilla), or simply soak in a natural rock pool. Farewell dinner at the iconic Washaway Café — a self-service honesty bar on a remote beach where you write your own tab. Overnight at accommodation.

Day 7: Departure

Morning swim at Avatele Beach, one of Niue’s few sandy beaches. Transfer to airport. The twice-weekly Air New Zealand flight departs, and as the island disappears beneath the clouds, you’ll understand why Niueans call it “The Rock” with such affection.
