Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Tallinn, Estonia
Welcome to Estonia! Airport transfer to your hotel in Tallinn’s Old Town. Evening welcome reception with your tour director. Overnight in Tallinn.
Day 2: Tallinn Medieval Old Town
Full-day guided walking tour: Toompea Hill (Upper Town), Toompea Castle, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, viewpoints over the red-tiled roofs. Lower Town: Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats), the 15th-century pharmacy, St. Olaf’s Church, and the medieval city walls. Overnight in Tallinn.
Day 3: Lahemaa National Park
Excursion to Lahemaa — “Land of Bays.” Visit Palmse and Sagadi manors, the fishing village of Altja, and Kasmu maritime museum. Walk the Viru Bog boardwalk trail. Traditional Estonian lunch at a restored manor. Overnight in Tallinn.
Day 4: Tartu — University City
Drive to Tartu, Estonia’s intellectual heart and 2024 European Capital of Culture. Visit the university (founded 1632), the student lock-up in the Town Hall, and the Aparaaditehas creative hub. Afternoon optional Estonian National Museum. Overnight in Tartu.
Day 5: Southern Estonia to Daugavpils
Cross into Latvia. Visit Daugavpils Fortress (early 19th-century, the only unmodified bastion-type fortress in Northern Europe) and the Mark Rothko Art Centre (Rothko was born in Daugavpils). Overnight in Daugavpils.
Day 6: Latgale — Land of Blue Lakes
Explore Latvia’s eastern Latgale region — the land of 1,000 lakes. Visit Aglona Basilica, Latvia’s most important Catholic pilgrimage site. Afternoon at a traditional pottery workshop — Latgale is famous for its black-fired ceramics. Overnight in Daugavpils.
Day 7: Riga Old Town
Drive to Riga. Afternoon guided tour: Dome Cathedral (housing one of the world’s largest pipe organs), St. Peter’s Church tower for panoramic views, the Three Brothers, and Riga Castle. Overnight in Riga.
Day 8: Art Nouveau & Central Market
Morning guided walk through Riga’s Art Nouveau quarter. Afternoon explore the Central Market (UNESCO) — five massive pavilions in converted Zeppelin hangars. Sample Latvian specialties: smoked fish, dark rye bread, and hemp butter. Overnight in Riga.
Day 9: Gauja National Park
Full-day excursion: Sigulda castles (Turaida, Krimulda), Gutman’s Cave, cable car over the Gauja River valley. Lunch at a traditional Latvian farmhouse. Overnight in Riga.
Day 10: Rundale Palace & Hill of Crosses
Morning at Rundale Palace — Latvia’s Versailles, built by Rastrelli (architect of St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace). Afternoon to Lithuania. Visit the Hill of Crosses, a powerful symbol of peaceful resistance. Arrive in Vilnius. Overnight in Vilnius.
Day 11: Vilnius Old Town
Guided walking tour: Cathedral Square, Gediminas Tower, St. Anne’s Church, Gates of Dawn, Vilnius University, and the bohemian Uzupis Republic. Afternoon free for amber shopping. Overnight in Vilnius.
Day 12: Trakai & Aukstaitija National Park
Morning at Trakai Island Castle on Lake Galve. Afternoon to Aukstaitija National Park — wooden villages, ancient beekeeping traditions, and crystal-clear lakes. Overnight near Aukstaitija NP.
Day 13: Kaunas — Modernist Marvel
Morning in Kaunas: Laisves Aleja, Town Hall Square, and Kaunas Castle. Explore the interwar modernist architecture that earned Kaunas UNESCO World Heritage status. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Vilnius.
Day 14: Depart Vilnius
