Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Luanda to Lubango

Fly from Luanda to Lubango. Visit the Cristo Rei statue and Tundavala Fissures — the dramatic 1,000-meter escarpment marking the edge of the Huila plateau. Evening briefing about the southern expedition.

Day 2: Lubango — Mumuila & Mucubal Tribes

Full day with the Mumuila (Mwila) tribe. The women are recognizable by their elaborate hairstyles coated with red clay, collars of ostrich eggshell beads, and distinct dress. Learn about their pastoral traditions and powerful matrilineal social structure. Camp under the stars with the reclusive Mumuila community for an authentic cultural exchange.

Day 3: Lubango to Virei — Into the Namibe Interior

Drive the spectacular Serra da Leba pass with its iconic hairpin turns. Enter the Namibe region where desert landscapes meet the mountains. Visit prehistoric rock paintings in Virei — evidence of human presence dating back thousands of years. Meet the semi-nomadic Mucubal people, known for their distinctive dress and cattle-herding traditions.

Day 4: Virei to Tombua — Red Canyon & Hidden Waterfalls

Trek to the hidden Hungueria Waterfall, concealed behind massive rock formations. Continue south through increasingly dramatic desert scenery to the Red Canyon, where colorful sandstone formations create a photographer’s paradise. Overnight in Tombua on the Atlantic coast.

Day 5: Espinheira — Namib Desert Meets the Atlantic

Drive into the heart of the Namibe Desert to Espinheira, where the Namib — the world’s oldest desert — meets the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the Cunene River mouth where flamingos, dolphins, and seals gather in surreal desert-coastal landscapes. Discover ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis plants, some over 1,000 years old.

Day 6: Iona National Park — Angola’s Wildest Reserve

Full day in Iona National Park, Angola’s largest protected area spanning 15,200 km2 of spectacular desert and semi-desert landscapes. The park is home to oryx, springbok, zebra, ostrich, and the rare desert-adapted elephant. Dramatic pink dunes contrast with the deep blue Atlantic.

Day 7: Iona to Lubango

Long but scenic drive back through Namibe province to Lubango. Stop at remote communities and panoramic viewpoints along the way. Farewell dinner in Lubango.

Transfer to Lubango airport for departure.
