Socotra Epic: 8-Day Small Group Summer Expedition — July to September

Day 1: Arrive in Monsoon Socotra

Arrive at Hadibu Airport. The khareef (southwest monsoon) has transformed the usually arid island — green vegetation carpets the mountains, seasonal waterfalls cascade from cliffs, and dramatic cloud formations create spectacular photography conditions. Transfer to Delisha Beach camp. Afternoon orientation and first swim. Evening: the summer Milky Way appears in full glory after monsoon clouds clear.

Day 2: Dixam Plateau — Green Dragon Forest

Drive to Dixam Plateau. The Dragon Blood Trees look even more dramatic against the green monsoon landscape. Morning mist creates an ethereal atmosphere perfect for photography. Visit the Desert Rose forest — pink blooms against grey limestone under dramatic skies. Wadi Dirhur canyon with seasonal waterfall. Camp on the plateau.

Day 3: Hajhir Mountains Trek

Trek into the Hajhir Mountains — Socotra’s granite spine, with peaks reaching 1,500m. The monsoon has brought the mountains alive — flowing wadis, blooming frankincense trees, and endemic birds active in the cooler weather. Visit a Socotri mountain village where summer is the traditional season of gathering frankincense resin. Learn the ancient art of frankincense harvesting from village elders.

Day 4: Homhil & Wadi Kalisan Waterfalls

Visit Homhil — the Cucumber Tree forest is lush and green. The infinity pool is fed by monsoon rains, making it fuller and more spectacular. Afternoon: Wadi Kalisan — monsoon-fed waterfalls and deep freshwater pools. The endemic Socotra Sunbird flits among blooming wildflowers. This is Socotra at its most alive.

Day 5: Hoq Cave & Arher

Morning hike to Hoq Cave — the temperature is perfect for hiking during summer mornings. The cave provides a cool respite. Afternoon: Arher Dunes — the monsoon winds have sculpted the dunes into new shapes. The contrast between white sand, turquoise sea, and dramatic clouds is photographer’s heaven. Camp at Arher.

Day 6: Dihamri Underwater & Frankincense Trail

Morning snorkeling at Dihamri — summer water temperatures are perfect, and marine life is abundant as the monsoon stirs nutrients. Afternoon: walk the frankincense trail — visit ancient Boswellia trees where resin has been harvested for millennia. Learn the traditional harvesting techniques passed down through Socotri generations for 3,000 years.

Day 7: Detwah Lagoon & Qalansiyah

Journey to western Socotra. Detwah Lagoon in summer — the monsoon winds create patterns on the turquoise water that photographers dream of. Kayak in the lagoon. Walk the sand spit. Afternoon: hike to the viewpoint for the iconic photograph with dramatic summer skies. Farewell feast — fresh lobster and fish prepared by local fishermen.

Day 8: Departure

Morning return to Hadibu. Final visit to the souq — summer frankincense, the freshest harvest. Transfer to airport. Fly out over the monsoon-green island that has revealed its most dramatic face to you.
