Many travelers race through Tahiti on their way to Bora Bora. This 5-day itinerary proves why that’s a mistake. Tahiti Nui — the larger of the two volcanic circles that form the island — packs waterfalls, blowholes, lava tubes, black sand beaches, and authentic Polynesian culture into one dramatic landscape. You’ll hike to the base of Fautaua Waterfall, watch ocean geysers erupt at Arahoho, and swim in cool grottos hidden beneath jungle canopy. Downtown Papeete adds cosmopolitan flavor with its bustling Marché, waterfront roulettes (food trucks), and pearl shops. By the time you board your inter-island flight, you’ll understand why Tahiti is far more than just a stopover.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Papeete & Sunset at Point Venus
Arrive at Faa’a International Airport where you’ll receive a traditional flower lei welcome. Your driver transfers you to your Papeete accommodation. After settling in, head to Point Venus on Matavai Bay — the historic landing site of Captain Cook, Captain Bligh, and the first London Missionary Society missionaries. The black sand beach and iconic lighthouse make for stunning sunset photographs. This evening, sample poisson cru (Tahitian-style raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime) at the Place Vaiete waterfront roulettes — a Papeete institution where locals gather after dark.
Day 2: Fautaua Waterfall & Tahiti’s Lush Interior
After breakfast, drive into the Papenoo Valley, following the island’s only river as it cuts through the volcanic crater. Your hike to Fautaua Waterfall climbs through tropical forest alive with birdcalls and wild ginger. The trail ends at the base of the 135-meter (443-foot) cascade — one of the world’s tallest waterfalls — where mist cools the air and rainbows dance in the spray. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy beside the natural pool. On the return, stop at the Papenoo Surf Break, where big-wave surfers tackle one of the South Pacific’s most powerful reef breaks.
Day 3: Arahoho Blowhole, Black Sand Beaches & Maraa Grotto
Circle Tahiti Nui clockwise along the coastal road. First stop: the Arahoho Blowhole, where waves force seawater through lava tubes, creating a dramatic geyser that can shoot 10 meters high. The adjacent Trou du Souffleur adds a second blowhole viewpoint. Continue to Lafayette Beach (Plage de Lafayette), Tahiti’s most beautiful black sand beach, where volcanic sand meets crystal-clear lagoon water. After a swim, visit the Maraa Grotto (Grottes de Maraa) — a fern-draped cave with a cool freshwater pool where you can swim in absolute tranquility beneath limestone overhangs. End the day at the Vaipahi Water Gardens, where manicured botanical paths wind around lily ponds and tropical blooms.
Day 4: Papeete Market, Pearl Museum & Island Panorama
Rise early for Le Marché de Papeete — Tahiti’s two-story municipal market springs to life by 5 AM with fishermen unloading their catch, flower vendors arranging tiare bouquets, and artisans displaying monoi oil, vanilla, and hand-painted pareu fabric. Upstairs, browse pearl shops and craft boutiques. Mid-morning, visit the Robert Wan Pearl Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to cultured pearls, to understand why Tahitian black pearls command such reverence. In the afternoon, drive up to the Belvedere de Tahara’a (One Tree Hill) for a jaw-dropping panorama spanning Papeete, Moorea, and the reef-fringed coastline. Farewell dinner at a recommended Papeete restaurant.
Day 5: Departure or Inter-Island Connection
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, squeeze in a final swim at Lafayette Beach or last-minute souvenir shopping at the Papeete Market. Transfer to Faa’a International Airport for your onward journey or inter-island flight. As your plane climbs above the lagoon, the dramatic outline of Tahiti’s volcanic peaks reminds you why this island deserves far more than just a one-night layover.

Best Time to Visit
May through October offers the driest, coolest conditions (average 26°C/79°F). November through April brings warmer temperatures, higher humidity, and occasional tropical showers — but also lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and dramatic waterfall flow. The Heiva i Tahiti festival (July) showcases traditional dance, music, and sports.
