Day 1: Arrive Qaqortoq — South Greenland Welcome
Arrive in Qaqortoq. Afternoon exploration of Greenland’s cultural capital. Visit the Stone & Man sculpture trail. Evening briefing on the expedition ahead — 10 days of hiking, kayaking, and Norse history in the footsteps of Eric the Red. Welcome dinner of Greenlandic specialties.
Day 2: Qassiarsuk — Eric the Red’s Farmstead
Morning boat to Qassiarsuk — the very site where Eric the Red established Brattahlíð, the first Norse settlement in Greenland circa 985 AD. Walk among the reconstructed longhouse and church (a replica of Thjodhildur’s Church — the first Christian church in the Americas). Visit the small settlement and meet modern Greenlandic sheep farmers continuing the tradition started by Norse settlers 1,000 years ago.
Days 3-4: Sermilik Fjord Trekking
Two days hiking through the dramatic Sermilik Fjord region. Trails follow ancient paths used by Inuit hunters for millennia. Pass through valleys carpeted with Arctic wildflowers (July-August). Panoramic views of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s edge. Camp at pristine lakes and fjord-side locations. Your guide shares knowledge of edible Arctic plants and traditional hunting methods.
Day 5: Tasiusaq — Farm at the End of the World
Arrive at Tasiusaq — one of Greenland’s most remote sheep farming settlements, accessible only by boat. A handful of families live here among dramatic peaks and fjord waters. Explore the settlement, meet local farmers, and learn how they maintain centuries-old pastoral traditions in one of Earth’s most challenging environments. Overnight at a local guesthouse.
Days 6-7: Kayaking the Inner Fjords
Two days of sea kayaking through the sheltered inner fjord system. Paddle beneath 1,000m granite cliffs, past waterfalls cascading directly into the sea, and among icebergs in every shade of blue and white. Camp on remote beaches at the fjord’s end. On the sixth evening, a special Greenlandic barbecue of freshly caught Arctic char.
Day 8: Ice Cap Edge Expedition
From Narsarsuaq, trek to the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet — the second-largest ice body on Earth after Antarctica. Stand where the ice begins, stretching 2,400km north. A humbling perspective on the forces that shaped this land. Learn about glaciology and climate from your guide. Optional: walk onto the ice sheet’s margin.
Day 9: Return to Qaqortoq
Boat transfer back to Qaqortoq. Free afternoon for final exploration — local craft shops, the furrier, Greenland’s only tannery. Farewell dinner celebrating the completion of this epic journey through Greenland’s Norse and natural heritage.
Day 10: Departure
Transfer for departure from South Greenland. Depart with memories of Viking homesteads, kayaking among icebergs, and standing at the roof of the world.
