Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Niamey — Gateway to the Sahel
Arrive at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger’s capital on the banks of the Niger River. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon: orientation walk along the Niger River — the third-longest river in Africa, the lifeblood of West Africa. Visit the Grande Mosquée and the Grand Marché. Welcome dinner of grilled capitaine (Nile perch) from the river. Overnight in Niamey.
Day 2: Niamey — National Museum & River Life
Full day in Niamey. Morning: visit the National Museum of Niger, one of West Africa’s best museums with pavilions dedicated to traditional architecture, musical instruments, and Tuareg and Fulani culture. Visit the artisan center to see silversmiths creating the intricate Tuareg crosses and jewelry that Niger is famous for. Afternoon: pirogue (traditional canoe) ride on the Niger River, passing fishing villages and watching hippos surface near the banks. Evening: sunset at the Grand Hôtel terrace overlooking the river. Overnight in Niamey.
Day 3: W National Park — Niger’s Wildlife Sanctuary
Early departure for W National Park (2.5 hours from Niamey), a UNESCO World Heritage site shared between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Benin. Named for the W-shaped meander of the Niger River, this park protects one of West Africa’s last intact savanna ecosystems. Afternoon safari: look for African elephants, West African lions (critically endangered, fewer than 250 remain), cheetahs, hippos, buffalo, roan antelope, and the endangered West African giraffe (fewer than 600 remain, now only in Niger). Birdwatching: over 350 species including Abyssinian ground hornbill and saddle-billed stork. Overnight at W Park lodge.
Day 4: W National Park — Full Day Safari
Dawn and dusk game drives — the best times for predator sightings. Explore different sectors of the park: the savanna woodlands along the Mékrou River, the gallery forests along the Niger, and the floodplains attracting massive herds of antelope. Picnic lunch under a baobab tree. Afternoon visit to a nearby Fulani village to learn about the nomadic herder culture. Overnight at W Park lodge.
Day 5: Agadez — Gateway to the Sahara
Fly to Agadez (or drive if flight unavailable — 950km, the journey itself is an experience crossing the Sahel). Agadez was the legendary southern terminus of the trans-Saharan trade caravans, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Arrive in time for sunset from the Grand Mosque minaret (27m), the tallest mud-brick structure in the world, built in 1515. The view over the old town’s maze of mud-brick houses stretching to the desert horizon is unforgettable. Overnight in Agadez.
Day 6: Tuareg Culture & Sahara Dunes
Full day with the Tuareg, the “Blue Men of the Desert” — the nomadic Berber people who controlled the trans-Saharan trade routes for centuries. Morning: visit a Tuareg silver workshop to see the creation of the Agadez Cross, the symbol of Tuareg identity. Learn about Tuareg culture, music, and the tifinagh script (one of the world’s oldest writing systems). Afternoon: camel trek into the Ténéré Desert dunes. Ride through the rolling sand dunes as the sun sets, casting long shadows across the Sahara. Evening: Tuareg music around the campfire, traditional mechoui (roast lamb) cooked in the sand. Overnight in a Tuareg desert camp.
Day 7: Sahara Sunrise & Return to Agadez
Dawn over the Sahara — watch the sun rise over the world’s largest desert from atop a dune. Camel ride back to Agadez. Afternoon: explore the Agadez old town — narrow winding streets, ancient mud-brick houses with intricate facades, and the Sultan’s Palace. Visit the camel market (one of West Africa’s largest, especially during the Cure Salée festival). Evening return flight to Niamey. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Niamey.
Day 8: Depart Niger
Morning visit for last-minute Tuareg crafts. Transfer to airport.
